Guess it all depends on what the person doing the gifting can afford to give without breaking the bank. Still others just like to send out pancakes and wads of paper just so they can send the message attached to it. A lot of people seem to care only for the messages they get with the gifts over the actual gifts it seems.

If they did they did. I don't think they quit the site though. They probably tired of the guild and all the time needed to raise funds for the kind of gifting they think they have to do in order to get what they think they should get in return.

Not really. You see whenever there's an event of this magnitude on Gaia people feel the need to break out the anonymous aliases and start gifting people. It seems this is what's going on. If there were a Giftpocalypse someone would have made a thread about getting a gift of a particularly high price. Most people are getting Burnt Boxers or RIP Conan items. So not really a Giftpoalypse because the precipitants aren't talking about gifting others. This is just event related stuff. If you're talking about the recent rash of anonymous gifting being mentioned in the GCD.
