Fuyu no Bara
Chapter Two

Berry

I opened my eyes and saw a pile of water in front of my bed. “Hmm..?” I looked out my window and saw snow. “Winter already?” I said walking outside. Then out of the corner of my eye, I saw a young boy. He had short silver hair parted over one eye, soft yellow eyes, a white shirt with gray shorts. And a green octopus on his head. “Hello. I thought these houses were empty.” He said jumping on the ledge in front of my house. “I’m Tako Umino.” He said bowing. “Octopus of the ocean?” I mumbled. “Yes, I understand its odd, but my mother and father lived in an ocean palace.” He said as the octopus pulled itself off and sat back down a little farther back from where it was. “You mean kyūden wa, nami no yō ni?” I asked. “Yes, you’ve been there?” he asked poking the octopus as it swung a leg at his finger. He let out a laugh. “Yes, im Berry.” I said poking at it to. I could have sworn it blushed. “Oh! I haven’t seen you in ages!” he said with a wide grin. He lunged at me with open arms. I caught him with a hug and fell back onto the ice. “Owww…” I mumbled. He pulled himself up on his hands and knees over me. “Oh im very sorry.” He said, with a laugh. Kobi walked outside and just looked at us. “Am I interrupting something?” he asked, a bitter tone to his voice. “Um…no you’re not.” I said. Tako stood up and held his hand out. “Tako Umino. Please to meet you Mr.…?” “Kobi.” He said shaking Tako’s hand. “Owww!” he shouted pulling his hand away. Kobi jumped down from the ledge and walked to the frozen lake. “What happened?” I asked looking at Tako’s hand. “He squeezed really hard.” He said holding his hand, which now was bright red and swollen. “Berī chan aishi te iru n da!” Kobi shouted. I looked down at him and saw him standing, tears running down his cheeks. “Watashi mo kobianata wo aishi…” I said smiling. Tako looked back and forth at us. “Kono subete wa, amai desu…” he said laughing. “What on earth are you guys saying?” Siren said walking behind us, Killre at her side. “Kobi and Berry said that they care for each other and this little squirt said that its sweet pretty much, you airhead.” Killre said with a laugh. “Shut your mouth.” Siren said pointing her gun at him. Kobi jumped up to the ledge in front of me. “Watashi to issho ni aruku…” he said smiling and holding his hand out. “Hai sā.” I held it tightly and we walked toward Hikari no hashi. Also known as the bridge of light. The bridge was coated in ice; the sun that usually covered the front was icy and slick. He and I stood on it carefully to prevent falling. “Kobi, why did you glare at Tako?” I asked. “He was on top of you, why else?” he said staring into the sky. I just laughed. “He slipped and we fell.” I placed my hands on the iced over railing. My fingers became cold. “I see.” He said. He placed his hand on my cheek. I turned my head to look at him. “Berry, you’re a beautiful girl, and a lot of guys think so. But you’re also unstable. Letting a guy get too close to you could set of the balance of good and evil in your blood.” He said kissing the top of my head. “Don’t let anyone win your heart Berry.” I looked at my feet. “I already have…” I said looking up at him, my face red. “What…?” he said, his eyes widened.

Siren

Killre sat on the edge of the icy ledge. I pushed him and he slid off, hitting the ground instantly. I started laughing. “Bitchi!” he shouted. I just laughing harder, then fell off the ledge and landed on my head. Killre began laughing and pointing at me. “Oh shut up!” I shouted as I threw a snowball at him. It hit his face but he kept laughing. Tako stood next to the frozen lake. The green octopus was sliding on the ice waving its tentacles around. While he wrote in the snow with his finger. Ring and Shiranui came out of their room. “Why are you two so lovey dovey?” I asked flinging another snowball at Killre. “Um, we are married you know. We have been for 523 years.” Ring said. Im sure he was saying something else but I blurted out the only thing that came to mind. “You guys are OLD!!” I shouted. Shiranui gave me a cruel stare that made my blood boil. “Wipe that grin off of your face!” I shouted drawing my gun. “Siren enough!” Berry shouted as she and Kobi walked back from their walk. Kobi had a shocked and almost scared look on his face. Berry was holding his hand tightly. “What’s wrong with you wolfy?” I asked. He didn’t even look at me. “We…had a long talk…” Berry mumbled. “About?” Tako said as he put Kako back on his head. “Important stuff…” Kobi mumbled walking up to his house. Berry still holding his hand. They shut the door. “Well, that’s convenient.” I said.

Tako

I laughed at Siren, she was so cute. Her sarcastic attitude made me laugh. I threw Kako at Kobi’s room and it perched on the window. “What are you doing?” Killre asked. “He can record and then show us their conversation.” I stated proudly. Siren smiled. “Cool!” I felt my insides turn to mush. ‘She thinks I’m cool…’ I thought. Siren walked over to me. “What else can it do?” she asked. “W-well, it can record thing happening, it can steal abilities and it can create tsunamis.” I said feeling my face heat up. “Wow, he’s got a lot of power huh.” She said sitting on the edge of a tree stump. “Yeah, I guess.” I mumbled sitting next to her. Kako jumped down to me and I threw it to the icy waterfall. An image of Berry and Kobi sitting next to each other appeared. “We need to find a way to rid myself of my fathers control.” Berry said. “I’m not sure how we can do that. Maybe Shiranui can figure out a way.” Kobi said as he took his cloak off and hung it. Berry squeezed the end of her skirt. “I’m sorry…” she said as tears fell down her face. Kobi sat down next to her and held her. “Berry, it doesn’t matter if you are destined to rule Hell. I’ll make sure I stop it.” He said. Everyone gasped.

Berry

“How dare you!” I shouted as I saw the others watching Kobi and me like we were a movie. Kobi sat behind me and continued to sulk. “I’m sorry.” He said. “It isn’t your fault Kobi.” I said. He just looked at me. “Kobi stop.” I said walking over to him. I looked into his eyes. “I’m leaving soon. Don’t stop me. Don’t chase me.” I said as I walked back to my room. I could see Kobi through the window. He looked mad. “You can leave I don’t care anymore. But we will come after you Berry.” He said as his gaze narrowed. I smiled. “Have fun searching. I’d like a two day head start.” I said picking up my bag. “Alright.” I didn’t say goodbye to anyone, I just ran away. They all watched as one of their friends left. I ran so fast I couldn’t even tell what I was running past. All I saw was white. My legs began hurting from running so hard. My mind began drifting; I left my best friend, my companion, my dragon, and my angel. I ran so far that I came to the edge of the ocean. “What the…?” I mumbled to myself. “Are you lost or something?” I heard someone say behind me. I turned and saw a tall pale man wearing black leather pants and black shoes with a sleeveless red shirt and bandages going up both of his arms. His hair was black with a red streak in it. “Uh no… Well yes.” I said. “I’m Jin Saito.” He said holding his hand out. I shook it. “Berry Sh-… Steel.” I said biting my lip. “Really now?” he said laughing. “I’m traveling to the next country. Would you like to come?” he asked. “Um I just met you.” I said as my ear flicked. “Yes, but do you have anywhere else to go?” he asked. “Um…no…” I said as my ears fell. “Well. Just take the ship, you don’t have to hang around me.” He said. “I guess so.” I said following him to the dock. He kept looking back at me. “What?” I asked. “Nothing, I’ve just never seen anyone with cat ears and a tail before.” He said laughing. I felt my face heat up. “W-well… I can explain that…” I said. He just flicked my ear, making it twitch. “Kyaaaaahhhhh….” I said swiping at his arm. He rubbed my head. “I’m not a kitty…” I mumbled. “But you act and look like one.” He said flicking my ear again. I scratched his arm. “Ha… Kitty has claws too?” he laughed. “I’ll bite you.” I said baring my teeth. “Do it.” He said drawing a sword. I felt my tail wrap around my leg. “Um… N-no thank you.” I said laughing nervously. He walked onto the boat as I followed. As I looked onto the end of the ship I saw two girls. Total opposites. “Rin! Kodo!” Jin shouted running to them. Rin had long hair covering her eyes that was purple, wearing a short black dress with a red butterfly pin on the sleeve. Kodo had short blonde hair with a pink shirt with a white skirt, broken glasses and a bar code on her forehead. “Who’s she Jin?” Kodo said. I noticed her pupils; they were shaped like rectangles. Jin shrugged. “I just met her, she was lost.” He said. I realized the sun was down. “How late is it?” I asked. “Oh about ten thirty. Why you tired?” Kodo asked. “A little…” Rin handed me a small card with the number 986 on it. “That’s your room. Next to ours.” She said. “Oh I see.” I mumbled walking to the room. I saw two beds. One was made and the other was tumbled around. I sat on the one that was made and looked at my clock. ‘11:23’ I decided to go to bed. So I covered myself with the blanket and fell asleep.

Berry

I heard a low hissing sound next to my head. I quickly opened my eyes and saw two glowing blue eyes. I reached up and flicked the light on and saw a girl with black marks running from her eyes, her hair was clearly dyed red and had faded. Horns were coming from each side of her head. “What I didn’t scare you?” she said. “No, I can be scared anymore.” I replied sitting up. “Who are you?” I asked. “Slith.” She replied plopping onto the messy bed across the room. “You my room mate?” I asked as my ear flicked. She laughed. “You’re Berry huh?” she said. “Who told you?” I said. “I know you’re father.” She said lighting fire with her fingers. I gave her a very blank look. “Really now?” I replied. “Yeah, I kicked his butt.” She said laughing. ‘She freaking acts like Siren.’ I thought. She gave me a confused look. “Who is Siren?” she asked. “Stay out of my thoughts.” I said pulling the covers over again. “Snappy huh.” She said. I threw my lamp at her, barely missing her head. “Shut. Up.” I said closing my eyes. “Who is Kobi?” she asked again. I felt myself snap and flew over and pinned her by her neck. She gave me a shocked look. “R-right, go to bed.” She said, I got back in bed and fell asleep.

Shiranui

Kobi was pacing back and forth in his room. “Kobi go after her.” I said. “No, I promised her a two day head start. It was all she asked for.” He replied. Tako and Kako we’re looking at him concerned. “Well at least eat.” I said putting a pot of water above the fireplace. “I’m not hungry.” He said. I sighed. “Why did you let her leave?” Siren asked. “She had to.” He replied. Ring gave him an impatient look. “Why are you pacing? It looks like you’re excited.” He said. Kobi stopped and turned. “I am. I can’t wait to kill again.” He said smiling, a sick look on his face. “Kobi you don’t mean that.” I said. “Yes, she’s destined to rule Hell. And even if I didn’t want to, I’d have to.” He said sitting on one of the sacks. “Kobi stop.” Ring said. They looked at each other. “Kobi, Berry loves you… Why do you want to kill her…?” Siren asked. “She can love me all she wishes. I won’t ever love her back.” He said as a small bird came into the room. “Her two days are up. I’m leaving.” He drew his sword and left. I withdrew my body to the location of Berry’s locket.

Berry

I felt a hand on my shoulder interrupting my sleep. I very slowly opened my eyes and saw Shiranui. “What do you want.” I said blankly. “Kobi wants to kill you. You need to get away from this country.” She replied. “Listen you goody two shoes hag. I’m on a ship right now in case your blind a** hasn’t noticed. I’m running from him already. But I need you to spy on someone for me.” I asked. “Considering you just insulted me I don’t think so.” She replied. “You have no choice. You were assigned to me, Shiranui.” I said smiling. She gave me a scared look. “Before I died I saw a boy with brown hair and green eyes. Find out who he is.” I said. “I can’t. I don’t know his name.” She replied sitting on the floor. “You can find a way.” I said closing my eyes. “Berry, everyone knows now.” Shiranui mumbled. I turned to her and saw she was grinning. “You know what?” I asked. Shiranui got a blank look on her face, then fell over, Slith stood above her smiling. “I hate angels.” She said. “I would suppose, being a demon and all.” I said smiling. Shiranui’s form faded into my locket. “Well she’s not allowed out until I let her or I get hurt.” I said. “Ha. She had a ring on her finger, is she married?” Slith asked forming her body into a serpent shape could, slithering onto the ceiling. I just looked at her. “Yes, to a dragon.” I replied walking out of the room. “Rather strange isn’t it?” she asked following me. “I suppose, I don’t really care about relationships at this point.” I replied leaning halfway over the edge of the ship. “Really, why not?” she asked. “In my opinion love is pointless.” I said watching the waves splash into the side of the ship. “Huh. Is ‘Kobi’ part of this?” she asked slithering infront of me. “Yes he is, but I’m over him.” I said. She gave me a slick smile. “No you aren’t.” she said slithering. I brought my fist to the side of the ship making it shake. Slith fell into the rushing waters. People in their rooms beneath me were screaming and turning their lights on. “Idiots.” I mumbled walking back to my room. I sat in my bed drawing as passengers ran around outside. “I think the ship slammed into an underwater rock!” I heard one shout. I thought I heard Ring and the others in the scramble outside of the door. Then I saw a shadowy figure with dog ears and a tail. Slith appeared behind me. “So that’s him huh?” She said. I didn’t respond. “It wasn’t very nice of you to send me into the ocean.” She said slithering around me. “Yeah, what ever.” I replied. “What if he knew you were in this room?” she asked again. I grasped her neck tightly. “If you tell him, you won’t live to tell anyone anything else.” I snapped. She pulled herself away. “You’re more and more like your father every day aren’t you?” she snapped back. I kicked her hard and she slammed into the closet doors. “Listen you little wanna-be demon, don’t insult me or compare me to my father.” I said standing. Jin ran into the room breathing heavy and sweating. “What happened?” he shouted. “Nothing, someone just learned a little lesson is all…” I said, grinning. A girl with short blue hair wearing a blue shirt and shorts with boots, carrying a sword walked in behind him. “Do you mind keeping it down?” she said. “Azure, go back to your room.” Jin said patting her head. She quickly grabbed his arm. “Don’t put your hands on me, human!” she snapped. “Who are you?” I asked her. She took one look at me and smiled. “Konpeki no, jōyoku no tsumi.” She smiled. “You’re the sin, Lust?” I asked. She smiled and nodded; I noticed she had one eye. “And you are?” she asked. “Berī, musume wa jigoku no.” I replied. “You’re the heiress of Hell?” she said looking surprised. “Yes.” I said smiling. As Azure and I continued to talk Jin and Slith left. We talked for hours, until one of the shipmates came to the room to inform us that breakfast was ready.

Berry

I looked at the passing ocean, and thought about the boy I had seen before I died. Why was she following me…? “Berry-nii!” Kodo called. “Yes?” I said turning to her. “One of the crew members found a castaway in the luggage area going through your weapons!” she said pulling my arm to the front of the boat. There stood a young man with bright red hair wearing a black shirt with gold trim. He turned his attention to me, his eyes similar to mine, only blue. “Who are you?” he asked. “I think I’ll be asking you questions.” I replied pulling him into my room, Slith was sitting on her bed. “Out.” I demanded. “Jeez, not even a please?” she laughed. “Out!!!” I shouted. She slithered out. The boy sat on my bed. “What do you want to ask me?” he smiled. “First what is your name? Second why were you going through my weapon collection? Third why do you have the eyes of Belial?” I asked repeatedly. “Shugo. They looked interesting. I was born from Belial’s scales.” He smiled. “What about your eyes? They’re the same as Dorei’s.” he asked. I bit my lip and gave him a blank stare. “I am the daughter of Dorei Takata.” I said. He gave me a sad look. “You’re Berry huh?” he asked. I sat on the bed next to him. “I suppose you don’t remember me. We used to play when we were young.” He said looking at the floor. “What…?” I said, my eyes widened. “Yes… you always cried when my mother would take me away, and would beg to see me. I did the same thing.” He said rubbing my ears. I began purring. “You were my first true friend.” He said smiling. I started to remember him, I remember his mother bringing him to the castle garden, and how we would run around and wrestle. I remembered that once I fell down and slashed my knee, and how he carried me all the way back to the castle, and how it made me love him… I nuzzled against Shugo’s arm. He gave me a surprised look. “I guess you remember?” he laughed. “Yeah…” I smiled. Shiranui burst out of my locket breathing heavy. “Katakune. The boy you saw is named Katakune.” “Find him.” I said. She ran out of the room and flew away. “Who…and what the hell…” Shugo said looking out the door. “Nothing.” I said walking out. Azure was on her way to the food court. “Who’s he?” she asked. “This is Shugo.” I replied, holding his hand. I pulled him back into the room and shut the door. “Don’t like her?” he asked. “Actually she’s my best friend, but she’s one of the deadly sins.” I said. “Oh… Lust?” he asked. “Yes, she’s very well behaved, but I don’t want to take risks.” I explained, sitting next to him again. “Heh… this is a fun ship isn’t it?” he laughed. “Yeah, well it’s time for lunch, wanna eat with me?” I asked putting my jacket on. “You mean like a date?” he said standing. I felt my face turn bright red. “T-that isn’t what I mean!” I stuttered. He just laughed and rubbed my head. “I’m playing, and sure, my treat.” He smiled. My face didn’t turn any less red. “Y-yeah…” I mumbled. He smiled at me and walked out of the room. We walked all the way across the boat to the food court and sat down at one of the tables. A tall man wearing a tux walked over to us and handed us two cups of tea with a small bowl of sugar cubes, took our orders and walked away. “Shugo, why did your mother quit bringing you to the castle?” I asked dropping a cube into my tea. “She feared Dorei, she always spoke of how vile he treated you and your mother, even though my father never agreed, he always believed it was just a normal family, I at the time, was 7, so didn’t understand, but do you mind me asking, how were you treated?” he explained, then asked. “We weren’t treated very badly until I turned 13.” I said watching the sugar dissolve. “Really? What happened?” he asked again. I blinked a few times to prevent my tears from falling. “The day after my birthday, father brought home a tramp. Mother confronted him… and he punched her… I hid behind the guard in the room, as I watched him beat my mother senseless, I remember feeling my rage boil, and lunging at my father with the guard’s sword, and trying to stab him, trying to pull him off of my mother, wanting to kill him… I truly, truly did...” I felt tears running down my cheeks. Shugo put his hand over mine and squeezed. I looked up at him and saw he was pitying me. “I’m sorry… You didn’t need to tell me…” he said. I rubbed my eyes. “It… felt good telling someone…” I said smiling. He returned a smile. “I’m happy to be here for you.” He said. The waited came back with our meals and we ate. Once we were finished we walked back my room. I saw Azure sitting on my bed. “What are you doing here?” I asked. “What new moves did you learn?” she asked smiling. “Excuse me??” I said. “I asked if you had learned anything.” She said. I realized she had both of her eyes. I began charging my Hitsuzen charka into my right arm. “Imposter!” I shouted. She gave me an angry look. “God I hate how well you notice s**t, you get it from your mother.” She said smiling. Her hair shortened and became white, her figure enlarged, her breasts flattened and her eyes turned red. I bit my lip, knowing I wasn’t complete with my training. Shugo gave him a sick look. “Dorei…” he mumbled. “Ahh… Shugo, I haven’t seen you in so long. My how you’ve grown.” He cackled. I began backing up. “Running away Berry? Like you always do… You always run from anything you can’t handle.” He laughed. I saw Shugo clench his fist. “Shut up! Leave her alone!” he shouted. Dorei gave him a surprised look. “You’re defending her?” he asked. “Yes I am! Is that an issue?!” Shugo shouted, as two markings appeared on his palms. “… No, I do not yet have the power to take you on.” He said angrily. “Where’s Azure?!” I shouted. He gave me a smile that gave me chills. “Hidden.” He whispered. I began crying. “Where is she?!” I screamed. “I just told you.” He grinned. I grabbed his neck and squeezed. My voice became raspy and dark. “Tell me where she is or I’ll rip your insides out and make you eat them!” I growled. I felt my common sense fading, it was replaced with rage, all my emotions were replaced with rage and hatred. “The cargo hold…” he said fading away. I ran at my full speed to the hold, and I saw her tied to a large crate, unconscious. I ripped the ropes off of her. She fell onto me, groaning. I carried her back to her room and set her on her bed. Rin was walking in as soon as I walked out. “What did you do?!” she screamed. “Nothing.” I replied. I walked to the front of the boat where all my friends and people were. I saw Dorei standing in the middle of everyone. “That girl!” He screamed, pointing at me. “She’s Berry Shirioku! She killed her mother!” he shouted. I heard the whole crowd gasp, and saw my friends giving me almost frightened looks. I tried to scream, tried to explain everything… But I couldn’t open my mouth. “I…I didn’t…” I cried, backing away. The crowd started closing in. I ran as fast as I could to the storage area. The crown was nowhere to be seen. “I have to leave again…” I sobbed. But sadly everyone knew what I looked like, and the next stop wasn’t for 3 days. ‘I have to change my look…’ I thought. I rummaged through everyone’s belongings and found a tattoo needle, some kunai, a spare sword, and some metal and fishnets. I took the fishnets and put them around my left leg, took my jacket off, put the family crescent of the Satsujin clan on my arm, and carved the spare metal into S shaped blades. I looked into a broken mirror. Everyone would notice how long my hair was… I grabbed a spare kunai, and cut my hair up to my shoulders. One long lock of hair hung. So I tied to with a spare from my jacket. I looked at myself, feeling tears stream down my face. “Wow…” I heard behind me. I quickly turned and saw Shugo. “Your hair was so beautiful…” he said. “I cant let anyone know who I am now that im hiding…” I said. “Berry, what about your eyes, both of them are still red…” he said rubbing my head. I looked at the kunai in my hand. I thought about Azure, walking closer to the broken mirror. I put the kunai close to my eye, and slid it under. Shugo ran over to stop me, but I gauged it out before he could. I felt my face cringe and screamed. I had never felt this kind of pain before. Shugo covered my mouth, while his free hand glowed blue. He placed it over my face and the pain stopped. “That…was really stupid…” he said, handing me an eye cover. I put it on. “It’s… hard to see like this…” I mumbled. He picked me up and carried me to my room.

Berry

I drifted in and out of consciousness, for about a week. Every time I awoke, Shugo was sitting next to me, or holding me in his arms. I tried so desperately to stay awake and talk with him, but every time I would open my eyes, five seconds later, I would fall back to sleep. Not once did I dream, I spent forever floating in darkness. I was so relieved to open my eyes and see Shugo asleep next to me. “Shu…” I still didn’t have enough energy to speak. I lay there for an hour, then realized it was 3:23 a.m. I closed my eyes, and praying Shugo never found out who I really was…

Chasing after you, chasing after you
I want to cling on to you
That person disappears
At the rainy street corner

Happiness and memories too
Flow away in the water
The sound of rain hitting the small window
Tears soak my cheek

From the beginning (from the beginning)
It didn't link (didn't link)
The promise between you and I

In the playfulness of that brief time
I gave up on everything
I took it off as I cried
That pearl ring

From the beginning (from the beginning)
It didn't link (didn't link)
The promise between you and I

The face that won't go away
I hold to my chest
I tried to kiss
the rainy glass window
