Even if everybody in the entire world agrees that something is a piece of junk, if to my eyes it appears more precious and necessary than diamonds or the giant panda, I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to defend it to the death as the most important thing in the world. That is how I am. Because even if you happen to meet the love of your life, human beings are born alone, they think alone, and in the end they die alone. If you don't prize the values you choose for yourself, then what happens to you?
Each person has two tools with which to affirm his own existence. The first is "self". But that alone doesn't establish anything. He needs a sequence of events he's already advanced through. In other words, the self is formed by advancing along the vertical axis of "time". One can find hope, or despair, in the general idea of "the future". The second tool is "others". By affirming one's existence as reflected by others, one finds one's own worth. It's like looking in a mirror, really. This is all tied to the establishment of self.
