Haha, yeah
The effects are quite disturbing - the "main" monsters are there every time, such as the ones you trigger by picking up things or taking a certain path, usually the "right path" that leads you on - but then there are monsters that... might not be there every time. I watched Mangaminx's Let's Play a while back, and she had a truckload more monsters than I ever did. Another player found a corpse on a fountain when he logged back in to the game, when there was no corpse before, proven by video. On my first playthrough, I went to the Archives and there was no monster breathing in my ear the whole time, only the one that is seen to enter the righ path on way back. Nothing growled into my ear at any point, and I was quite frankly disturbed to see that it happened to everyone else.
And, on the next playthrough, it happened to me too. But I still didn't get the random monsters Mangaminx did - probably because I was running like a headless chicken through the area so that I would never, ever have to see the randoms. xDD
