I didn't care much for the graphics of 7, and the constant materia-swapping grew tedious, but the story was one of the more dark and surreal ones. The DS remake of 4 was a masterpiece, I feel!

Honestly, though, I dislike most Japanese RPGs because they lack the sophistication and maturity of the American ones, which are based on some form of the D&D rules sets, which are vastly more realistic and conducive to non-linear play.

I'm playing that right now and am finding the characters somewhat ... one-dimensional. My first Final Fantasy was FF4, only at the time it was FF2 in the U.S. The stories and characters and villains were much more fully-rendered and sympathetic during the Super Nintendo era; I feel that Final Fantasy has gone the way of commercialize pop culture degradation after 7, like most of music, TV, motion pictures, anime, and even books have.

I saw MTV when it first came out; I was there when there was only Showtime and HBO on cable and there were no commercials or self-promotions. To give you an idea of whom your speaking with.

If it weren't for moogles and chocobos I'd have dropped the Final Fantasy series after VII.
