Knowing Gaia has sold out to moneyhungry corporate wolves is one thing too many for me to bear. I shall leave Gaia and think about returning only when quality has won over quantity again.
You do not sell items which fall apart at the seams. For people will tell their friends not to buy there.
You do not sell food which has been poisoned. For you will lose customers more quickly than you can prepare meals.
You do not sell a website that's not working. For people will leave it.
I spent a long time of my life (from 2003 up to 2008) pretending Gaia wasn't what it turned into. The signs were there, I simply didn't look into them.
The following quote, from the MyGaia Feedback thread, made me realize Gaia simply doesn't care about their userbase anymore.
Anyone feel like restarting go-gaia.com with a clean slate?

Some facts that have been brought up way back in this thread that you need to know before getting so passionate. Since 2006 Gaia has received $32million dollars in funding with the last $11million received in July 2008 (yup last month).
This is not a small server run by volunteers who rely on donations for server, maintenance and bandwidth anymore. The employees do not get paid or rely on running the site from the $2.50 that you send in for your MC’s anymore. This is not the site that was originally set up by comic book artists anymore . This is a full fledge corporation that receives big money through investors and sponsorship to flog their ads (such as Skittles and MTV). Your MC and cash shop money is not going to make a difference on how the site is going to be run and what it will become anymore.
In an interview with the CEO of Gaia – Craig Sherman which is posted on the net, Craig has compared Gaia to Myspace and Facebook back in 2007. Craig came from Benchmark Capital which is the main funder of Gaia over the last two years and has given Gaia $21million dollars over two years. Craig’s goal is to make Gaia the fastest growing online world hangout for teens, so he can get more funding or sell off Gaia for big millions. There are lots of rumours on the net about Gaia selling out again. More users, more millions. In one interview he has stated that what pays the bills is the online ads.
April 2007 is when he was interviewed and compared Gaia to Myspace and Facebook. Are you surprised that the new design looks like a bad mutation of both sites? Based on all the reading I have just completed about Gaia in press releases and interviews, I feel that we are wasting our time telling them not to turn Gaia into a MyGaiaFaceSpaceBook. This was decided over a year ago and this new look WILL be rolled out. The only feedback that will be read and POSSIBLY listened to are design comments. Like the tabs should be bigger and purple, and the threads should be at the bottom not the top. You are wasting your keyboard telling them not to do it – it is a done deal.
It is really too bad that Craig’s “big vision” is not to fix all the glitches and items that have been broken or just never worked in the first place every time changes are made I am not saying that the developers that are hired to fix things are not doing their job. I am saying that there are not enough developers dedicated to fixes and glitches and that there are more designers and coders who do nothing but sit with advertisers to figure out the next quest to flog their brand.
If you take a look at the lists of items that users are screaming about to have fixed anyone can easily see that the focus is on growing not fixing. Seen this before with other sites as they grow and get sold to big corporations. The focus becomes the dollars and flipping the site not on what made the site so great in the first place. Sorry, but this a done deal in my opinion, you either suck it up and hang on for everything that will be broken with this new update, or find another site to hang.
I really really hope I am wrong and will log on one day soon to find that towns, inventory, gifting, and all the users who still have their trading passes frozen from the item normalization glitch has been fixed and that there will be an announcement that a new feature like doing something with trash and flowers is being worked on rather then what is happening now. I do believe that the admins and all the other worker bee’s at the site truly care about the users, but they have to listen to their leader and the direction he wants the site to go or find another job and can only imagine how frustrating it is for them as well, especially the ones that have been around for a long time. |
