My English lit teacher in high school. We were doing a short unit on proverbs and colloquialisms and she presented one to the class: "Hunger is the best pickle."
She then began to explain it as meaning: "Back then, people ate pickles for appetizers so being hungry was like eating a pickle."

Most certainly. Although the USA makes it difficult for US Europeans to spend any real time in your country without an awful lot of money. It's a shame, as I'd happily work in the States for a short while, and Vegas had enough of the adventurous tingle to make me want to go back. I'm sure it's all very mundane for you, though.
