Casta suo gladium c** traderet Arria Paeto
quem de visceribus traxerat ipsa suis,
"Crede mihi, vulnus quod feci non dolet," inquit.
"Sed quod tu facies, hoc mihi, Paete dolet."

Sounds like someone needs to grow some skin on her psychology, because my first two sentences were hardly offensive, unless you're the Queen of England or a Southern Baptist preacher, or some other delicately egotistical and socially anally-retentive blue-blood or holy roller.

I am direct, honest, and favor the blunt approach over cocktail party circumspection. Directness may offend, but propriety can obfuscate and misdirect; and ultimately communication is a utility to me, not an aesthetic.

Any language can do that. In fact, the use of language, especially written language, teaches people to think logically, sequentially, delayed gratification (books are more work and require more brains than TV shows do). There's no logical or empirical basis to a belief that certain languages excel over others as regards intellectual development, excepting maybe mathematics, which is more abstract and precise than any other human language. In fact, I recently read that the switch over to electronic-based communications and media may be greatly responsible for the erosion of childhood and its counterpart adulthood, and the argument was compelling because it pointed out that e-mails and TV are like mindless immediate gratification, retarding cultivation of the above-mentioned traits.

So, settle down, okay? I wasn't taking a crap on your choice of studies and even expressed my own interest in them.

HELL no! Why would anyone even learn such languages? I almost was going to learn Koine Greek and Aramaic when I was considering becoming a bible scholar, but instead I became a godless atheist and studied French, German, and Russian. I'm not dismissing your interest, not at all; I find Latin to be fascinating, but no one speaks it and that's what language is for me, something more pragmatic. if I'd have gone the classical literature or history routes I would have, though.

Did you learn Latin? Outside of biology, that is, which I think is still more Greek than Latin.

I don't even know what epigrams are ... Google time! Ah, I see. Do we still do those, are are we just unaware of what they are as literary devices?

Martial ... wasn't he a Roman historian and philosopher? I think I walked past a book of his stuff in the library recently.
