You are an artist. You lose the ability to create

Crabbe Essay

Crabbe is the story of a trouble teenage boy who tries to solve his problems by taking charge of his own life. 





The three main problem's that Crabbe struggles to overcome is learning how to let people help him, how to think of people other then himself and finally how to let others in. These are major problems in his life because since he won't let anyone help him he has to do everything by himself-like when he was planning and packing for the trip into the wilderness. During the course of the novel it is shown that Crabbe thinks of his own needs and problems and that other people should deal with their own problems by themselves. Finally, since Crabbe refused to let others become close to him, he was always alone and grew selfish and nasty to the people in his daily life.





The first of Crabbe's three major problems is that he doesn't let people help him. This has caused problems for Crabbe in numerous ways, like when he was planning and packing for the trip. He had no one who he could turn to and ask for help in planning because he pushed everyone away and refused help when it was offered until it got to the point where no one tried to help Crabbe because he wouldn't let them. An example of this from the novel is in the first chapter when Dr. Browne is trying to find out more about Crabbe so he can help him-since Dr. Browne had no knowledge about what had happened he only had assumptions to go on-Crabbe refuses to cooperate at all, he doesn't even let them get past the preliminaries so the two can come to understanding. By the end of the novel Crabbe was beginning to let people help him, although he still has a ways to go and must learn the difference between independence and reliance. Crabbe is still struggling to let people help him but once he figures everything out he'll probably find his life is a lot easier and not so hard.





During the novel Crabbe is quite selfish, thinking of himself above others welfare. This selfishness has caused many problems in his life, even if he didn't quite realize it, like the problems with his parents. He didn't think about how they would be affected by his running away nor did he consider their side of the argument, he only saw his own problems and unhappiness. A prime example is when Mary risks her life to save Crabbe, then tells him "Its no big deal. You'd have done it for me or someone else" [[p74]] and Crabbe realizes that he wouldn't have, he would have let them die. However, by the end of the novel, Crabbe is beginning to overcome his selfishness. He realizes how badly he hurt his parents by running away[[pg158]] and then he decides to help other kids overcome their problems in Project Adventure like how Mary did for him[[pg169]]. Because of his new compassion for others, Crabbe will be able to reach out and understand people far better, learning that its not just all about him.





Crabbe's thoughts and views towards the world have made it so that he finds it extremely hard to let himself get close to other people. He's always distancing himself from others and doesn't want to make friends he's labelled as of them as cruel and fake, going along with whatever is considered "normal and cool". An example of this is in the Digression (2) chapter, "Anyone or anything is either in or out with them. If you're out, you're considered insane and fair game for all sorts of attack and abuse. They're like a wolf-pack, snarling and snapping and everything "alien"." [pg155] However at the end of the novel, when Crabbe has come to terms with recieving help and his selfishness, Crabbe will most likely be able to look past stereotypes and find a real friend.





Crabbe has gone through a lot during the course of the novel. He's learned to accept help, to come to terms with and overcome his selfishness and he's begun to let people into his life. By the end of the novel Crabbe has mature
