OMG, catnip makes him more strung out. I still give it to him for a treat every now and then, but it seems to increase his desire to scratch everything and anything.... he's eaten 3 of my bath sponges. I just don't have bath sponges anymore. No matter how hard I try to hide them, he finds them and eats them... Is there an award for world's weirdest cat? I think we'd be at least close to winning. lol rofl
You sound like you have a pretty tame kitty. That's how all my kitties before this one were. so easy to teach. My black cat was such a lady, she wouldn't dream of damaging furniture. I didn't even need to teach her. She'd use cardboard boxes instead. She was the smartest cat I've ever owned, but I raised her from a kitten. I think the issue with our current cat (A silver tabby) is he was a stray for a year before we got him. Who knows what happened in that time? Something traumatic, I must assume. Because even just the sound of it raining causes him to freak out, he is hyper and anxious all the time. We've tried the feline hormones (Feliway) that are supposed to calm kitty down... and they help a little, but he's just generally very tightly wound for a cat.
Nothing seems to work with our kitty. We've tried everything... positive reinforcement, water spraying, sticky paws (tape that is supposed to stop their clawing), giving plenty of other scratching surfaces that he receives rewards for scratching, but nothing works... he's just a crazy cat, with a lot of neurotic tendencies. I've honestly never owned a cat as high strung before. I think we're just not going to have another sofa til kitty grows old and passes away. Thems just the breaks. razz
Oh, well. It's cool. Because if we hadn't adopted our cat, I worry that anyone else would have had the patience to deal with him. He probably would have had a really sad life if we hadn't come along and adopted him. But he is a pampered kitty with us, and his neurotic tics are at the very minimum tolerated and accepted. I bet he'd have been re-homed thirty times if we hadn't come along. So, I am glad we saved him. We do love him, he's just been a very special case. And I've owned a lot of cats and dogs before. I had no idea a domestic animal could do so much damage, or have so little reaction to methods that had always worked before (like the rewards system)... I just don't put anything I care about in the path of his destruction at this point. He eats anything and everything. I wish he didn't eat books, tho. That has been really hard. It's like having a special needs toddler that never stops being a toddler for the next 20 years. XD
But we do love him and his crazy insanity!! He's SUPER LUCKY he found us, tho... lawdy lawdy.... and he is very cute, so that helps. lol
May your path be well-marked, with fresh air, good food and fellowship, companions of both heart and mind... Honor your dreams, for fallen dreams are nightmares hard to heal... allow... whenever and wherever possible...
