Satoko Houjo is one of the main characters of Higurashi no naku koro ni, and it's spin offs/sequels. She is Satoshi Houjou(who she refers to as "Nii-Nii", part of the Japanese word for "brother" repeated)'s younger sister. With her parents dead, her brother gone, and nobody to protect her from her several abusive relatives who are at several points in the story her foster parents, her life has been made a living hell. She is shown to be skilled at making traps, and often practices her trap making skills on Keiichi Maebara, who reminds her of her missing brother. Her least favorite food is pumpkin.
After her brother disappeared, she began to believe that all the bad things that had been happening to her(like being taken in by her abusive uncle again) where punishment for always being so clingy to Satoshi, and always relying on him so much. She began to believe that it was some kind of test, and that her brother would return if she proved herself to be strong, and that she didn't need to rely on him so much.
Satoko is one of few people who have a very high level of Hinamizawa Syndrome, and Rika Furude allowed herself to be used as a test subject to help find a cure because Satoko has it. Supposedly, the illness caused her to kill her parents(who had supposedly died in an accident on a cliff). Satoko is also color-blind, and seems to have a hard time telling the different between cauliflower and broccoli.
