Hungary x Austria side

Austria/Hungary is a popular pairing in Hetalia: Axis Powers, involving the characters of Austria and Hungary. It is notable for being the only heterosexual and "deliberated" pairing given in canon so far, and the most prominent of the heterosexual pairings in fandom.

Childhood: As a child, Austria often wound up beaten up by the younger Hungary and had to be bailed out in wars by his friend Switzerland, who had wanted him to become a strong fighter.

Hungary, meanwhile, had both a friend and rival in another boy, a knight of the St.Maria Order.

The House Of Habsburg: Having been conquered by Mongols and the Ottoman Empire in her youth, the teenage Hungary eventually wound up as a servant of Austria and part of Holy Roman Empire's household. Though Austria paid more attention to handling political affairs and playing his piano, Hungary was shown to care deeply for him, and expressed concern at how the villagers were treating him. She also found that he was kinder to her than other nations had been.

After Holy Roman Empire's departure, only she, Austria, and the young Italy (aka: Chibitalia, Ita-chan) were left in the mansion. The two proceeded to raise Italy through his teenage years.

The Seven Years War: In a strip series that currently remains in progress/unfinished, Hungary was still enraged over what had been done to Austria and decided to storm Prussia's house to face off against him.

(It is to be noted that a strip series on the Austro-Prussian war is also planned for the future)

Monarchy of Austria-Hungary: In an event yet to be illustrated and depicted in the series, Austria and Hungary formed a pact to support each other in war, though in Hungary's case it was more like asking him for help.

The two married on June 8th, 1867, marking the start of their union and the Austro-Hungarian Compromise. But their marriage and dual monarchy was short-lived, and ended after WWI.

Buon San Valentino: On Valentine's Day, at some point during World War II, Austria and Hungary still appeared to be close long after their separation. Though Austria anonymously sent her a Valentine's Day package, Hungary easily figured that it was him due to the postman's description (and Austria's distinctive Mariazell hair).

Austria also attempted to counsel Germany and give him advice on his relationship with Italy. But due to a trick by Prussia, Germany's attempt to propose to Italy didn't go as planned, and his mind became flooded with several emotions in the confusion of it all.

Hungary found the book, entitled "How To Treat Your First Partner", and found the advice in it hilarious and completely inaccurate. She and Austria attempted to go to a bookstore to find a book on how to console a German, but Prussia intervened once more and quickly scribbled together another phony book, unbeknownst to the two. .

Modern Life: In a strip taking place after the April Fools '07 event on Kitayume, Hungary caught France in the process of stripping and molesting Austria. Though she was shocked at the sight and didn't like how France was making him cry, she began to enjoy watching it. She managed to rescue him (and continued to gawk at him while he put his shirt back on), though Austria mentioned that France's bizarre display of affection was something that a woman of her age shouldn't have seen. She still discreetly snapped a few pictures of him as she turned her back

In the Christmas '07 strips, France and Prussia trick Austria into removing his clothes so that he may buy a present for Hungary. A flustered and outraged Hungary declares that it is "too much," and puts a violent stop to it with her frying pan. However, she is later seen thanking "Santa-san" (France) for the "present".

She still turns to him with the suffix "-san" - a relic of past times, when she was his maid. However, in our times she calls him that very seldom. In the some editionals of the side-stories this suffix doesn't appear.

In the strip titled France nii-chan and the frying pan, Hungary was told to hit France with a frying pan, and she wasn't sure if she really should. As she approached France, he was talking to himself about how much he likes Austria's face and demeanor, mentioning that "I'll [France] definitely make him French territory!". At this point, Hungary was willing to hit him with the frying pan.

In a segment in Gakuen Hetalia, when Hungary introduces herself to Seychelles, she tells the latter that her heart is "Austrian territory."

Summary: We can assume that they either live in cohabiting relationships, or they are very close friends.

Fan Speculations biggrin ue to hints thrown in Buon San Valentino and the Christmas '07 strips, it is believed that the dissolution of the Austria-Hungary union has not prevented them from seeing each other and continuing a non-married relationship. In Hungary's original profile, it is noted that though their marriage was short, she remains proud of the period of time they spent together.

Some fans speculate that since the compromise was more for Hungary's protection in wars, that the marriage was more of an arranged one and a convenience than a traditionally romantic situation. In production notes by Himaruya, it is stated that Hungary felt defiant under Austria's rule, yet yearned for him at the same time with her complicated feelings.

Hungary (ハンガリー Hangarī?) was once a nomadic girl, who thought she was a boy,User Image who was picked on by Mongolia and a younger Turkey (then called the Ottoman Empire); she has two ancestors mentioned one simply called Hun, which is possibly a reference to Attila the Hun, and Magyar. After Prussia discovered the fact she was a woman, Hungary decided to settled down and moved in with Austria, eventually becoming a couple and remaining with him until they were forced to separate at the end of World War One. Hungary is known for being somewhat of a mother to Italy and being the only one who knew he was a boy during their time with Austria and Holy Rome and being eccentric. Like Austria, Hungary is a rival with Prussia since she helped Austria out during the war mentioned above and has constantly protected Austria since then and still loves him since he was the only one who showed her respect. It was revealed by Himaruya that Hungary was initially intended to be a cross dressing male character instead of female but was later switch the User Imageidea with Poland and also planned to make Hungary more witch-like; she also has a flower in her hair that represents Lake Balaton; on another note it is said that Hungary is the manliest character in the series and is a fujoshi. Hungary is voiced by Michiko Neya in Japanese and by Luci Christian in English.

A long time ago, Hungary was a nomadic nation who chased horses on the plains. After settling down, she became a powerful nation that had been dominating Central Europe for about 600 years.

In the past, she used to beat up Austria, but because other nations weren't really nice to her as she got older, she came to love Austria because he was kinder to her than anyone else. The Monarchy of Austria-Hungary was a compromise that said that they would support each other in a fight, and since then she’s helped him out several times.

Her relationship with Prussia is more or less as longtime rivals. As children, Prussia always assumed that Hungary was a boy because of the way she talked and acted (not to mention that Hungary herself was convinced that she was male). Because of this, he picked on her and made fun of her hardships. It wasn’t until Prussia found Hungary wounded after battling the Ottoman Turks that the two of them both realized that she was, in fact, a girl. Since then, the two have been on somewhat bad terms, but Hungary often states that even though she hates Prussia, she would be very lonely if he died or if something else ever happened to him.

She was also picked on by Mongolia and Turkey (then the Ottoman Empire) as a child.

When she was working in Austria’s house with Italy (then Chibitalia), she acted like a mother to him. She was the only person who knew of his true gender, but despite this, she often dressed him traditional Hungarian costumes and garments worn by women.

She doesn't get along with Romania to the point where she uses the names of famous Romanians to name her dogs. In response, most jokes native to Romania are about Hungarians (much like the “Polack” jokes or “In Soviet Russia...” jokes that most are familiar with).

Her personality is introverted, but she works hard behind the scenes. She is a great friend to have, but a fearsome enemy to have as well. At first glance, she seems to be a beautiful and ladylike maiden with a wonderful singing voice, but sometimes her tongue slips and her potty mouth from her wild days as a horse-riding nomad rears its ugly head. Hungary likes flowers, and is almost always seen wearing some in her hair, which are said to represent Lake Balaton (found in the western central area of present day Hungary). As shown in several strips, Hungary appears to be somewhat of a fujoshi, and is noted as being the manliest character in the series, despite the fact that she is a woman. As her weapon, Hungary wields a frying pan that she usually carries around with her to hit Prussia with.

Though her most recognizable outfit is her green military uniform and matching beret, she's been seen wearing nothing but traditional Hungarian costumes and garments when drawn wearing other getups.

Also to be noted is that Hidekaz Himaruya initially intended for her to be a cross-dressing male, a role that was later given to Poland who was originally intended to be female. The original Hungary character design was actually recycled and used as Lithuania's basic design.

Appearance

She has long, light brown hair and green eyes. Her most common outfit, seen in merchandise and official artwork, is a green military uniform and matching beret. In the actual series, she can usually be seen dressed in traditional Hungarian folk dress.

The flower she wears in her hair is meant to represent Lake Balaton. It has been alternatively colored pink and yellow in the official artwork, though it is colored orange in the anime adaptation.

Personality

In her past, Hungary was once a nomadic girl who loved to chase after horses on the plains, and was a rather tomboyish child, to the point where she believed herself to be a boy until hitting puberty. She is described as being both a reliable older sister type (mainly to Belgium and Italy) and the manliest character in the series.

She doesn't get along well with Romania, to the point where their relationship is described as being like that of a cat and a dog. It is also said that due to her dislike of Romanians, she would name her dogs after them.

Mongolia is said to have bullied Hungary in her youth, along with the Ottoman Empire (Turkey).

Relationships

Austria

Hungary's former husband, and close friend, yet the status of their relationship is going very well. Throughout the anime and manga, the two share many moments that suggest that they have feelings for one another. For example, in the Buon San Valentino strips, Hungary is given a gift from an anonymous source, but when described the man has many of the same facial features that Austria has. In the anime, she seems to enjoy hearing him play his piano, close to his side. Also, during the third season, Hungary seems worried that Germany wants to annex Austria and she asks him "to please consider his feelings." Although the relationship has been confirmed, they both seem to care deeply about the other's well being and happiness. Many believe that the marriage was mostly a valuable war alliance and the two supported each other in war. The two have a very close relationship, despite the dissolution of their alliance and marriage. As children, Austria was often beaten up and defeated by Hungary when it came to wars, but when they got older, she became his servant while they were both under the rule of the Holy Roman Empire.

Italy

When they were both under Austria's rule, she and Italy were very close and she saw herself as his older sister figure. Apparently, she was one of the few characters who knew his true gender at that time.

Prussia

She and Prussia were rivals as children. Prussia and Hungary herself both believed Hungary to be male. Since he made fun of her problems during that time, Hungary is seen to hate him and often hits him with her frying pan whenever she sees the opportunity to. Notably, Prussia is seen to have groped her as a child, unaware of her true gender and thinking that he was simply grabbing a weak spot, though he was utterly horrified by his actions. They are also seen as a pairing in some of the fandom.

Prussia x Hungary side

Prussia/Hungary is a popular hetero pairing in the series Hetalia: Axis Powers, involving the characters Prussia and Hungary.

Teutonic Order :

Prussia and Hungary used to fight together when they were kids. Prussia was always ready for action and easily won his battles, but Hungary managed to easily beat him up when he wanted to claim Burzenland. Prussia mentions in his diary what a creepy guy Hungary was.

One day, Prussia comes across Hungary and states that 'he' looked like s**t. Hungary tells him to go away because 'he' has issues, to which Prussia suggests 'he' should just see the King because he has a lot of money. Hungary says 'he' has dignity and would not show such weakness, but Prussia says that 'he' can talk to him. Hungary doesn't want to, but says that 'he' must be ill because 'his' chest hurts with a throbbing pain. Prussia grabs Hungary's chest, proclaiming he's found 'his' weak spot. Hungary tells him to go away, but suddenly starts 'feeling good', causing Prussia to hastily take his hands away.

Prussia then asks '...do you have a p***s?' Hungary brushes it off with 'Everyone will grow one when they grow up anyway!' Prussia is startled and tries to tell Hungary that it doesn't work that way, but Hungary laughs and calls Prussia a 'kid' for not knowing. While Prussia still tries to tell Hungary that she's wrong, Hungary is called away to deal with some suspicious people. Hungary simply thanks Prussia for listening and says that what they talked about is a secret; she tells him to go back because she won't do his job for him.

Prussia is then seen in a church, praying to God that he 'might have sinned' and that worrying by himself is too painful, to which God replies 'Tell me something new.'

Duchy of Prussia :

After Prussia became the Duchy of Prussia, he is in the forest urinating, stating that doing so after 'changing his name' feels good. He hears a voice from the bushes, scared that it could be the ghost of the makowiec he ate. After the voice tells him to 'come this way, now!', Prussia realises it isn't the ghost of a pastry he ate, but a person. He states the person looks like he's seen better days, receiving a 'I'm not gonna take insults from a guy who thought his lunch came to haunt him'.

Prussia suddenly realises that the person is Hungary, and she suddenly recognises him too. Prussia taunts Hungary, asking how she got so beat up. Hungary replies that The Ottoman Empire and one of his sects were responsible and that she could use some treatment. Prussia takes off his pants and tells Hungary to show him her injured places, though Hungary is startled at which part of clothing he intends to use to dress her wounds. They struggle, Prussia intent on using the cloth and Hungary not keen on him using that particular cloth.

During their struggle, Prussia notices that Hungary's shirt has come open, revealing part of her breasts. He looks away, saying he'll find something else to cut up and use while thinking 'aww dammiiiit'. Hungary wonders what has gotten in to Prussia and thinks it's because Prussia saw her chest. She says she figured he'd see it eventually, and laughs, proclaiming that they're 'PRETTY AWESOME MUSCLES, HUH?', coinciding with her belief in earlier strips that she was a boy. Finally she comes to a realisation, saying that Prussia's reaction confirmed it. She tells him that she's always known that she's been different, and that it would explain why she was different to other people in stamina and physical strength. Prussia interupts by throwing his cloak to her, saying he has to move soon. Hungary isn't sure if she can keep it, but Prussia had already begun walking away. She notes that from the back, he doesn't look so well, and realises that his reaction might have to do with the fact that he's always been surrounded by males.

Hungary then settles into Austria's house, and is seen wearing a dress with a cloth over her head and a flower in her hair. Prussia peaks around the corner, telling her to get rid of her girly get-up so they can go hunting. Hungary states that she's not interested, and a note states that 'They began passing their days, just like this'

War Days :
When they got older, Prussia became involved in wars against Austria, and enjoyed beating him up. Even when they're not battling, he still enjoys teasing and annoying Austria in any way he can.

These things anger Hungary because she cares deeply for Austria, so she always beats Prussia up with a frying pan or simply with her fists, severly injuring Prussia and leaving him with no recollection of what happened to him. At times, Prussia also cries and begs for mercy when Hungary is about to torture him.

Modern Days :
Although Prussia fears being beaten up by Hungary, he still attempts to do naughty things to her. In a segment taking place in the Gakuen Hetalia universe in the Noto-sama 5 game, he had been secretly peeping at the dressing room where Hungary changes her clothes. Hungary also has expressed some concern for his well-being, saying it would be lonely without him on the comments to his April Fools' blog after he ate England's cooking and nearly died.

Fan Speculations :
Some fans speculate that Prussia has a crush on Hungary, due to some hints that he had been jealous of Austria and Hungary's relationship. Though this may be because he is jealous that they have a relationship in general, or even jealousy towards Austria. They also note several incidents where Hungary demonstrates that, although Prussia annoys her, she doesn't want him to die.

However, it appears that any possible romantic feelings that Prussia had for her are simply one-sided. In character notes given for Hungary, it is stated that she cannot stand Prussia due to the fact that he has made fun of her hardships since they were kids. Others will also point out that Prussia would be too proud about having avoided marriages to seriously pursue her as an interest.
