Okay, I think I found a tutorial that might actually work, but now I'm running into the fact that my Background layer is locked and I can't unlock it. What do I do?

Well I am trying to figure out how to use the layers. I want to clean up my image and then color and shade, but I can't figure out how. I colored in one picture which you can see here: http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/picture-post/first-time-using-photoshop-please-critique/t.57995747/ without using any layers at all, but I had to clean it up by hand and it was very difficult. Kuro uses a tablet, where as I am using a mouse, so she wasn't really able to help me. She doesn't need to clean up her images at all. xD
