I dunno. I read Twilight and imo it ruined vampires for me forever. And I know he started demonata as a child's book series, but I'm sure he had alot more fun than he thought he would with it. And I'm glad he let imagination run riot biggrin
And I think you're thinking of Dark Calling. Where Grubbs slashes out Kernel's eyes.
Ooh that reminds me, Kernel's Story was also one of my favourite, his first one, trying to save his 'brother' it made me like him alot before i read Bec :3

Just the demonata really. I liked the vampires when I was younger, but never read past the 2nd book. I'm into the Demonata now, I feel it was written more for older teenagers than the vampire thing seemed to be for younger teenagers. Maybe thats just the impression I got from the first two books.
