Story of my life
A knight in shining armor
On a steed of snowy white,
Pure of heart, brave and true,
He always does what's right.
He comes riding up in the nick of time
Sure to save the day
Then while lesser men stood looking on
He turns and rides away.
He rides into the sunset
While the music softly plays
Only in fairytales and make-believe
Does the story end that way.
With the best of good intentions
I set out into this world,
Set out to slay the dragon
Set out to save the girl.
But this old world wasn't quite the place
That I'd pictured it to be,
Surely no place for heroes
Or would-be ones like me.
For I found here neither black nor white
But only shades of gray
And who's to say what's good or evil
In this mixed up world today.
Another lonely knight upon a quest
Who tried to do what's right
Who stumbled in the darkness
While searching for the light
Who never rode up in the nick of time
And never saved the day
Whom no one cared to gaze upon
As he turned to ride away
A thousand lonely sunsets
End a thousand empty days
And never once as I turned to go
Did I hear the music play.
At last in armor bent and battered
On a steed no longer white
I tried my best, tried and failed
Still I tried to do what's right.
I never slew the dragon
Nor found the damsel who'd be saved
So weary and disheartened
One last time I ride away.
I ride beyond the sunset
Where heroes go to stay
In the land beyond the sunset
At last... the music plays.
