I have come to see the world through a generally cynical, morbid but otherwise optimistic perspective. I like to entertain the idea that "optimism is a luxury for the foolish." However... I feel as though I have a clearer view of what is around myself than many of my peers, and I've realized that what I don't want to be is a mirror image of my father. It is true that pure optimism will bring you misfortune- and accent such misfortune rather unpleasantly. But, as I've mentioned below, there must be contrast for there to be appreciation. A bit of optimism goes a long way toward highlighting what would otherwise be a very dreary existence with the tinges of pleasant memories.
There is no such thing as perfection. Without darkness, there can be no light. Without death, there can be no life. Many people realize this. However, what they don't realize is that there are no such things as 'good' and 'evil.' There are only differing views, conflicting goals, contrasting principles. Each and every person will see their own causes as 'good' and those that oppose them as 'evil.' The winners define what is good and what is evil. That is why world peace is nothing but a fleeting and impossible fantasy.
Each time there is a shift in political, religious or moral paradigms, people will fight over that shift. The victor of that conflict will define the next paradigm until a group becomes strong enough to fight against it. Those are the ground rules for rule by the strong. There is no way to fight that, for the truly weak will always lose. While it may seem that the weak may emerge victorious, that simply means that they had strengths not entirely apparent to others, yet in the end it was their opposition that was truly weak, in spite of a facade of strength.
