It's been a while since I watched any Anime, but I highly recommend Haibane Renmei, and the Onegai My Melody series as well as stuff like Inuyasha or Full Metal Alchemist. FLCL is a good choice too, plus it's short.
Sci-fi wise I recommend Doctor Who, Being Human, Primevil, and Warehouse 13 for series. Syfy channel released 3 "miniseries" that are simply really long movies called Tin Man, Alice, and Neverland that I highly recommend for interesting spins on familiar stories. Syfy also released a movie you can watch from starz on youtube called Beyond Sherwood Forest, which, despite its bad effects, is rather good in my personal opinion. Does that help?

Also, you should use the word fabulous more, it's a fantastic word.
