Alaska herself is a very suspicious, distrustful, and paranoid young lady, who has her eyes in her pocketbook and an itchy trigger finger. As a state that overwhelmingly votes Republican, she adores her guns and keeping her wallet good and heavy. Unfortunately, she has to depend on tourism, oil money, and government handouts to keep herself alive. During the 1970's, she had thoughts of tearing herself out of the union, and has not let go of that sentiment since. As such, she is not quick to speak up or put her opinion down. This isn't helped by the fact that when she does manage to find a voice, she ends up embarrassing herself. She is mistrustful of foreigners, and warms up slowly to newcomers (particularly California and any eastern state), but adores those born within her borders like a doting mother. She pays for the best teachers, sporting the highest K-12 public school pay anywhere in the U.S., and is very supportive of the Alaskan Natives that dwell in her borders. She's very clingy as a result, and hates to let go. Despite being one of the few states that actively pays its natural-born citizens to stay in the state, the best and brightest often leave. This 'Brain Drain' has left her scrambling to try and keep her smartest within the state, often to little success. She still maintains a decent relationship with Russia, and considers him one of her founders long before America had any part in it. Her universities still have Russian studies as one of their strongest majors as a result, and many of her cities and inlets still carry Russian names. She carries scars on her fingers and hands from Japan's invasion in 1942, and detests America for completely forgetting about the almost 4000 souls she lost as a result of fending off the Japanese, or that she was ever invaded or bombed at all.
