About

Between Heaven and Earth stands Azriel with blade drawn in hand and he is destruction of all.

I am sworn to Azriel's service and aid.

Azriel is the most enigmatic and mysterious of the six Archangels, thus stories and sightings of him are as rare as his actual tasks. He is a solitary figure who does not hold many offices or titles compared to his heavenly brethren (Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, Lucifer, and Raphael), and this serves his ultimate purpose. He is the least utilized, but most feared of the Archangels, for he holds the power of Life and Death over all, even those who call him brother. Azriel is the ruler of Shehaquim, also called Sagun, which is the third heaven. He is the Angel of Death, and of Destruction. He is considered a kameoth, a protector against Evil.

The finely tattooed runes on Azriel's face are in formal angelic script and translate, as his name, to "Whom God Helps." These symbols inlaid upon his skin are a combination of the marks of Death and of Destruction twisted into one effigy.

Azriel's Origin
When the time came for God to create Adam, Azriel was one of four Archangels selected for a special task. Within Eden, there existed a tree that held the knowledge of the Universe, and the ground that the tree was planted in was sacrosanct. The Lord bade them all to bring him seven handfuls of earth from the base of the tree, for this new creation, which he called mankind, was to have the ability to learn and know more than any other that He had yet made. Michael, Uriel, Gabriel, and Azriel all made their way down to the new world, each intending to be the first to succeed in this mission.
As they stood at the base of the Tree of Life, each angel scooped up two handfuls of earth and realized that only one of them would be presenting their Lord with a single handful instead of two. As their competitive natures took hold, Michael and Uriel began to argue as to which tree would provide two handfuls and who would only provide one. Gabriel attempted to adjudicate the argument, but was soon drawn in as well. As the bickering continued, Azriel, who had declined to join the argument, moved away from the others and quickly filled a sack with seven handfuls of the sacred dirt. He then quietly returned to Heaven and presented the Lord with His commission.
Because Azriel succeeded where the others failed, he was given the duty of separating body from soul at the time of death. And the Lord designated Azriel the Angel of Death.

Azriel's Scythe
Azriel carries a black scythe inscribed with golden runes that he uses to store the souls of the dead. Written in gold on the scythe is a quote from Exodus in formal angelic script: "And he shall pass over your door, and you shall not suffer the Destroyer to come in and smite thee."
It is not intended as a weapon, but as a channeling device for spiritual energy.
Azriel travels from soul to soul, collecting them for their eventual restoration in Heaven. When he returns to the Guph to deposit the souls, Azriel pours them out of the scythe and back into their original resting places. Afterward, the souls are judged and sent to their respective afterlives.

Azriel's Neutrality
Azriel wears no armor and uses no protective devices because he does not enter into combat. He did not take up arms against Lucifer and the other betrayers during the Revolt in Heaven. The Angel of Death will not stand against any that he ahs not been instructed to take as part of his domain.

The Angel of Death is the final image all individuals take with them as they begin the crossover to eternal life. The raw fear mortals feel in those last moments of life so shapes perceptions of this Angel as to distinguish him from his heavenly brethren.

Shehaquim, Azriel's Domain
The Third Heaven is called Shehaquim, or Sagun and, as explained within the Book of Enoch, is unique in that its northern border touches upon the realm of Hell.
The Archangel Azriel presides over this densely populated realm, but he does so in name only, as the notoriously taciturn Archangel is rarely seen, allowing business to proceed chiefly of its own accord.
