Alycone was the daughter of the King of winds, and her husband, Ceyx, was the king of Thessaly. Alycone and Ceyx were a faithful and devoted couple and they never seperated. Nevertheless, their came a time when Ceyx decided he must leave Alycone and make a long journey across the sea. One of the nights he was at sea, a great storm broke out. The crew was terrified, but Ceyx was happy and at peace knowing that Alycone was safe on shore. The boat sank and all were drowned. As the waters closed over Ceyx, the word 'Alycone' was on his lips. When Alycone heard news of Ceyx's death, she flung herself into the sea.
The gods took pity on Alycone and Ceyx, and made the couple into sea birds.
According to another myth, Ceyx was so content with his wife and life, he made her call him 'Zeus' and he called her 'Hera'. This inflicted the wrath of the gods, and as punishment, Ceyz and Alycone were turned into birds.
