Contrary to what you may have read in elsewhere, I am in fact the first of the child assassins employed the Social Welfare Agency's Section Two. Originally, I was named Angelina, and was the victim of the ultimate in child cruelty. My father's business was going bankrupt, and my parents, in desperation, took out a life insurance policy on the girl. Later, when I was going on an errand with my dog Perro, a car came out to nowhere and struck the me. Somehow I survived, although now I was badly injured.
I was taken from my parents and placed in Section Two, which was in my infancy. Marco, a former soldier recovering from an eye injury, was paired as my fratello (meaning sibling in Italian, though here it's used to mean "handler"). After I was cybernetically repaired, Marco had renamed me Angelica, because that, even though Marco felt my parents were the scum of the Earth, they had correctly given me the name of an angel. During the chemical conditioning that followed, Marco entertained me with a story he made up, 'The Prince of the Land of Pasta', mostly to distract me from the hypodermic needles.
It was during a knife fight between two Section Two operatives ... one which I had broken up using my cybernetics ... that the decision was made to use me as an assassin against terrorists. I had performed supremely but soon a side effect was noticed in me ... the loss of long-term memory, caused by the conditioning chemicals.
Since then, I rarely go out on missions, the load usually taken up by Henrietta, Triela, and Rico---my gang. My fratello Marco is frustrated about the loss of memory I had experienced ... which included forgetting the story he made up to comfort me. On top of all this, I owe my heartfelt gratitude towards my dear fratello, Marco.
THE PUBLIC CORPORATION FOR SOCIAL WELFARE
In Italy, a private organization exists called "the Social Welfare Agency". In truth, the Agency is not as innocent as it's name says. It specializes in cover assassinations ordered by the government. However, the weapon of choice is possibly the most chilling... children... little girls, in fact!
Taken from families that were wiped out in criminal attacks, these girls are cybernetically enhanced and brainwashed into forgetting their pasts so that they become remorseless, cold-blooded killers. Jose, a handler of one of the girls, Henrietta, is worried, however. Jose is finding it hard to fulfill his duties to the Agency, as he is constantly concerned that Henrietta will continue to lose more of herself as she undertakes more missions.
It appears that the characters don't age after they have the surgery since Angelica looks as old in the present time as she did when she first joined the agency (which based on what Rico said had to have been at least two years ago, probably more).

FLEDA CLAES JOHANSSON
ALIAS: CLAES

AGE: 12 YEARS OLD
STATUS: Former ASSASSIN Now TEST SUBJECT
Not much is known about the past of my buddy Claes. What is known is that she was paired by a fratello (meaning sibling in Italian, though here it's used to mean "handler") known as Rabello, a former military policeman recruited by Jean.They had formed a bond together. Sometimes, Rabello would take her fishing, and he would try to impart some of his philosophy on her.
However, Rabello began to question the methods the Social Welfare Agency was usingand took time off. In fact, he was going to tell the press about the S.W.A. and its activities. Not long afterward, Jean had coldly told Claes that Rabello was killed in a hit-and-run accident (but there may have been darker motives that caused his death). Claes didn't take the news well.
Since Claes was without a fratello, she can no longer take part in missions with us. Instead, she has a new purpose: a test subject for refining the process of operations and conditioning. She can never leave the compound where we live, but it doesn't stop her from taking up other means to stay active between tests. Claes like to read, and is often reading the many books Rabello had left on the compound. She also cooks and tends a vegetable garden.
ELSA DESICA

AGE: 12 YEARS OLD
STATUS: ASSASSIN
Elsa is one of the newer girls employed by the Social Welfare Agency. Cold and aloof, she has a bad habit of alienating herself from the other child assassins, especially Henrietta. But strangely enough, the only emotional ties she has is with her fratello (meaning sibling in Italian, though here it's used to mean "handler") Lauro. However, Lauro's attitude seems to match Jean. So far, Elsa has performed well... but what will happen when she fails Lauro?
Elsa's name came from the name of a park which Lauro had taken her - the park's name was Elsa deSica. It was where Elsa said Lauro gave her life... as well as being a part of the tragedy to follow.
Elsa is the newest child assassin... she's very quiet and aloof. She seems to have similar personality traits like Jean, Marco's fratello. Elsa's Fratello is Lauro, a guy that doesn't care for her but only to get the job done. He was supposed to do a mission with Henrietta and her fratello, Jose, when before the night of the mission Lauro and Jose have a discussion. (Elsa is really in love with Lauro and does everything for him.)
Lauro was saying "I don't want to have anything to do with them, and you're to close with them." (He was talking about the child assassins.) While they were having their discussion, Henrietta decided to approach Elsa (who was in her room) and decided to finally talk to her since they had to complete a mission together. Henrietta walked in and Elsa was polishing her gun, Elsa was as mean as ever and said "What do you want?!" Henrietta just said "I thought we should talk since we're doing a mission together." Elsa then looked at her and said "I don't care about that... I'm doing it all for Lauro... I'm polishing my gun for Lauro and I will do EVERYTHING for Lauro... and if you mess it up I will never speak to you again!"
Henrietta left and the next day they set out to complete the mission. They went on top of a building to shoot the guy they were supposed to, and then Elsa looks at Henrietta and how Jose was helping her. Elsa looked at Lauro and after short moments she looked at them again. Lauro looked at her and said "Hey! Keep your eyes on the target!" Lauro shoves Elsa aside and said "Jose... take the gun and shoot him... Elsa apparently can't!" Elsa looked at him and said "Lauro-san...!"
They shot the guy and he died. They left, while Elsa stood there, frozen. Then the next day they were reported dead and found two bullets. Henrietta and Jose were on vacation and some investigators come there and ask them... after 1 day Henrietta called them over and explained what was most likely to happen. "If I loved my lover and my lover didn't love me back then there would be no reason for me to live." Then we see a flashback of what happened. It was Lauro and Elsa and they were walking. "Do you remember this place, Lauro-san? It's the place you gave me my name... and it's important to me."
Lauro turned around and said "Whatever... let's go... we're gonna need to wake up early tomorrow." Elsa pulled out her gun and pointed it and Lauro's back. She then shot him and put the gun by her eye and shot herself. (The only way the child assassins can die is if a bullet pierces to their eye through their brain, which is very unlikely.)
HENRIETTA
RACE: CYBORG
AGE: 10 YEARS OLD
One of the newest child assassins saved by the Social Welfare Agency, Henrietta is struggling to fit in. Her family had been killed in a mob raid, and she had been physically abused during the attack. When she was rescued, she had suggested continually that she would commit suicide. Jose, her future 'fratello' (meaning sibling in Italian, though here it's used to mean "handler") rescued the girl, afterwhich she was cyberneticly healed and conditioned into an assassin for the S.W.A.
However, the conditioning may have been done too well for Henrietta. She has a habit to fight whenever she perceives danger to Jose. And Jose still has reservations to the S.W.A.'s insistence to having young children to become assassins. He has been warned that she may need more conditioning... but he's wary, wanting to retain some spark of the girl's humanity.
When Henrietta family was murdered, she was 'assaulted' along side of them all night until her rescue the next day. In the anime they just say she was assaulted and they show her in a wheelchair with her long hair. In the manga there's a picture of her with no left leg past the knee, no right arm past the elbow, her left wrist was bandaged but bent in a strange, almost deformed way. And it looked like she lost her left eye as well. In episode 4, when Triela was talking about having menstrual pains Henrietta said she was envious of her because she (Henrietta) didn't have a uterus anymore, which hints that the assault probably included rape.
TRIELA
RACE: CYBORG
AGE: 13 YEARS OLD
The second prototype of the girl assassins (Angelica being the first), Triela's past is even more tragic than the others. A victim of a child smuggling ring in Amsterdam, the girl suffered from a number of rapes, tortures, and mutilations. When she was rescued by her future fratello (meaning sibling in Italian, though here it's used to mean "handler") Hilshire, she was nearly at death's door. After Hilshire was fired from Europol, he was picked up by Italy's Social Welfare Agency, where he became the girl's handler and gave her the name Triela. She lives in a room with Claes, a former assassin, now a test subject on the cybernetics process.
Unlike many of the girls, Triela doesn't receive the usual amount of conditioning as the others, mostly because Hilshire dislikes the conditioning process, as it shortens the girls lifespans. Jean often complains of this. Because of the low conditioning level, Triela is usually more rebellious than either Henrietta or Rico. Hilshire also take more of a 'hands-off' approach to her training, which yields better results.
Triela is an excellent markswoman, as well as a superb hand-to-hand fighter. However, sometimes her proficiency can be effected by menstrual cycles, since most her anatomy is still intact. And earlier in the series, she was irritated by Hilshire's gifts of teddy bears, mostly because he knew little about buying gifts for little girls. However, she copes by being a role model for the other girls, like Henrietta.
RICO
RACE: CYBORG
AGE: 13 YEARS OLD
STATUS:ASSASSIN
From the time she was born, the girl who would be know as Rico was confined to a hospital bed due to birth defects. While her mother desperately wanted to keep her alive, her father didn't like all the hospital bills as a result. Then her parents signed her off to the Social Welfare Agency, where her body was rebuilt and conditioned. The fratello (meaning sibling in Italian, though here it's used to mean "handler") assigned to her, Jean, had given the girl a boy's name... Rico. She shares a room with another assassin, Henrietta.
Rico receives the most conditioning of the girls, mostly because Jean regards her and the other child assassins as little more that tools of the trade. However, even when Jean abuses her, Rico still retains a cheery, upbeat attitude, mostly from the fact that she is not confined to a bed all the time. However, because of the heavy conditioning, she follows her orders to the letter... even if she has to kill innocent bystanders in order to keep her work a secret.
Rico spent her life, up until her 11th birthday (which was stated in the manga), in a hospital bed. The manga said it was because her limbs were all deformed, but in both the manga and anime they show her on a respirator. Her episode takes place 2 years later (she says "then two years ago on my birthday I got a new body"). Which says that she's 13 at least.
