My name is Matt and I'm a graphomaniac...a compulsive writer.
I'm one of those clowns who never could figure out what he wanted to be when he grew up. I majored in English in college, and while I was pretty good at producing papers professors liked, it was nothing more than a game for me. If a class interested me, I got A's. If not, I'd blow it off and flunk.
It wasn't until I was about 24 that I realized thta all that garbage swirling around in my head (aka, my imagination) could be put down as writing. Fiction writing was nothing like the dry analytical papers I did in lit class. It opened up a new world for me that I'm still exploring.
So, it's kind of funny to me that while it seems I am one of the older Gaians, I have less writing experience than some of the teenagers here.
If I can give one piece of advice to other writers it's simply this: Read a lot and write a lot. The first lets you see what good writing should look like, the second gives you needed practice. I have actually seen some people post that another's writing was so bad she should stop. The opposite is true, in my opinion.
Keep writing!
As for books, I have read quite a few classics in the course of my English career, and I am a huge Shakespeare fan...but I am not a literary snob. Science fiction is my first love, and lately I've gotten into paranormal and become a sucker for all kinds of supernatural stories.

That begs the question: where did you see yourself?
My mother is always encouraging me to work at a bank. She must see it as a stable career move. How do you like it? I'm also an aspiring writer, just a highly unproductive one...which I fear is the hallmark of an aspiring writer who will never meet her aspirations.
