Try Trillian then. It uses more ram but its prettyful and does the same stuff (sans the crashing hopefully)

Try installing pidgin!

It runs most popular instant messaging programs like AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Google IM, etc all at once. It typically takes less ram to run than AIM would by itself. That's what I use. You can tell it to show all your online friends only and everyone on your different IM clients shows up on one convenient list. (cheesy salesmen grin). And It's free!
