I like panting dogs, cats in my lap, freshly sharpened pencils, agnostics, poetry and fiction, serious discussions about silly things, and waking up very early on accident.
I think you'll find I smirked about my photography way before I took that class sweatdrop I think you're prematurely connecting correlation to causation in that I'm someone who took a class and therefore must be pompous about it.
Would you have really felt any better if I said photography was my major? That'd just make me more pompous! "Oh, I'm majoring in it so I must know what I'm talking about."
Anywho, I'll watch out for sounding pompous in the future I guess. I don't know if spend time around photographers or artists in general but I think most people would approach this pretty identically to me. It may seem self righteous but it's very common to refer to yourself a lot when critiquing other work simply because art is subjective. You can't say "You should have ___" unless it's something stupidly obvious, so you end up saying "I would have ____." Showing your own work in order to make a point is also very, very common since if there's any art you know it's your own.
Might also just all come down to that there's no tone on the internet and you're reading what I say differently to how I intended it.
What a shame that I know apparently know everything wink Let me explain that most of my photos are from before I took that class. I didn't take it to learn, I took it to have fun taking photos around 20 other photographers (and that's exactly what I did).
Just because I'm not very educated in photography and I'm not going to an art school for it doesn't mean I don't have any skill. Annie Liebovitz didn't major in photography and I hear she's pretty okay at taking a picture or two. If you judge a person's art entirely on what classes they're taking on it, then I'm not really sure what to say about you. That's probably one of the most ignorant things I've ever heard beside racism. So, I'm sorry that some day I want a family and I don't want to struggle to earn them food, but computer science is my major. I'm also sorry I'm neither going to a prestigious university nor am I an indie hipster who live out of a cardboard box but is still somehow lucky enough to have lots of art supplies (in case that's what you prefer).
I made that thread for the reason that I'm decently experienced in photography so I'm probably at least better qualified than most of the "I'LL RATE U" threads made in my wake. I doubt you'll find a full fledged professional with his own studio on Gaia, and if you do I doubt he's on the GD, and if he is then I doubt he wants to make a thread about it. Maybe you just think I'm not qualified to judge high art like GD sigpics, but I feel like I'm validated because of the simple fact people like my work. I must be doing something right! As for the technical aspects of photography, I don't think you're arguing that I don't understand cameras, but if you are then that's just ridiculous biggrin
I never said I was the best, I said I was pretty decent. I offered pictures of my own because the common fad these days is for 14-year olds with cameras to make a "photography myspace" and run around calling themselves photographers. I posted my own pictures just to validate myself to whoever looked at the thread. I think I'd be getting a lot of s**t if I hadn't. Also I think it's funny because I didn't use the rule of thirds in any of the three pictures I posted smile (okay, now that I double check myself I guess the third one kinda does have it)
I don't think I ever called myself the best, so I'm just confused where exactly I'm coming off snotnosed. If you read the rest of the thread I think you'll find that I got into some pretty healthy discussion with other photographers.
shrug, I think for the most part I'm nice. There were a few photos I wanted to outright say "This really sucks, I think you need to just start over." from people posting their deviant arts or flickrs. But instead I pointed out specific problems for them.
If I were still taking my photo class and someone brought these in from somewhere else saying "Hey guys, what do you think?" I'm pretty sure it'd get torn apart way worse. Actually it wouldn't even get torn apart, it would get called not a photo and discarded. I'm not saying we were a bunch of assholes, I'm just saying that's how we'd feel about this sort of work.
If someone has a picture like..
there's really not much I can say besides it needs to be retaken to be considered seriously.

Heckz no.
again though, why?
..Why'd you ask? I don't think what classes I've taken really defines whether or not I'm good at what I do, especially in regards to art.
A semester, my college, 19? I'm still 19, it was early 09
