I personally actually find the Gaia picture post a lot more helpful most of the time and I've made more friends here than I have on DA. I guess because DA is so huge, it's hard to get noticed.

The bad thing is, DA favors stuff like anime, so it'll probably take a while to get noticed like tons of other great artists. I think you just have to browse around, talk to other artists...that sort of stuff.
I don't seem to remember you, I...oh yeah! From 5 minutes ago! DA is confusing and fairly simple at the same time. Everyone's free to sign up and submit art. When you get favorites or favorite something, you add it to a collection of pieces you, well...favored, so you can easily look at them again later. Watching artists and vice versa means you can keep track of what they submit.
Hopefully I helped somewhat. I'm horrible at explanations. If this made absolutely no sense at all, then, uh...the FAQS on the site are probably a lot more useful than me.
