LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 25, 2014--

Ryland Homes in Las Vegas is honored to announce that it has received the ENERGY STAR(R) Certified Homes Market Leader Award for its commitment to energy-efficient construction and diligence in protecting the environment. The award, formerly called the Leadership in Housing Award, recognizes organizations' work in promoting energy efficient construction and helping homebuyers to experience the peace of mind, quality, comfort and value that come with every ENERGY STAR(R) Certified home.

In 2013, Ryland Homes in Las Vegas built 403 ENERGY STAR(R) Certified new homes, saving homeowners $120,900 on monthly utility bills. This astonishing accomplishment is the equivalent to eliminating emissions from 143 vehicles, saving 731,445 lbs. of coal, or planting 564 acres of new trees, and has led to Ryland Homes being recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency as a 2014 Market Leader.

Each new Ryland home in Las Vegas is built with the environment in mind. Ryland's HouseWorks(R) program ensures the use of energy-efficient materials and features like low-E windows, ENERGY STAR(R) appliances, low VOC paint and more, meaning lower energy consumption. With HouseWorks(R) , a new Ryland home works to preserve the environment, conserve energy and provide more comfort. Ryland's thoughtful planning of neighborhoods and efficiently designed homes help save on monthly utility bills and the Earth's resources.

Ryland Homes also uses the HERS(R) Index (Home Energy Rating System). The 2006 International Energy Conservation Code is the standard used to measure energy used by a home. The less energy exerted means a lower HERS index score. Homes that give off more energy receive a higher score on the 0 to 150 scale. While a typical existing home can score around 130, most brand-new Ryland homes score between 85 and 60. That translates to big savings for homeowners, especially in Las Vegas' sunny climate.

Ryland Homes offer fresh new floorplans, innovative features, bold designs and family-friendly amenities that make any of Ryland's Las Vegas communities the perfect place to call home for every lifestyle. Whether it's a convenient condominium, a spacious townhome or a luxurious single-family home, Ryland Homes has something for everyone.

Since 1967, Ryland Homes has been committed to building high quality, energy-efficient new homes. Today, rooted in its national strength, local focus and unwavering commitment to the customer, Ryland proudly builds in 17 states across the country. Two police officers were gunned down by a man and a woman today as they were eating lunch in a Las Vegas pizza restaurant, officials said.

"They were ambushed," Sheriff Doug Gillespie of the Las Vegas Metro Police Department said at a news conference this afternoon, though he said it was not yet known why the two were targeted.

Witnesses said the two yelled "This is a revolution" during the attack, but officials said they had not yet identified a motive for the shooting.

"We don't know anything about the suspects yet," Las Vegas police spokesman Larry Hadfield told The Associated Press.

The couple were later found dead, after they had shot and killed another person at a Walmart store nearby, the sheriff said.

The two cops were identified as Officer Alyn Beck, 42, who had been with the department since 2001 and leaves behind a wife and three children, and Officer Igor Soldo, 32, who joined the force in 2006 and is survived by a wife and baby.

"It's a tragic day, it's a very, very difficult day," Gillespie said. "We still have a community to protect. But we will do it with our heads held high. It is truly a tragic day."

The two police officers were sitting in a CiCi's Pizza restaurant eating lunch late this morning when the man and woman walked in and opened fire on them.

"What precipitated this event we do not know," Gillespie said. "My officers were simply having lunch when the shooting started."

Both of the officers were hit, but one was able to return fire, he said.

The suspects then fled to the Walmart across the street, where they fatally shot a person inside and then killed themselves in an apparent suicide pact, the sheriff said.

The female suspect shot the male and then shot herself, Gillespie said.

The identities of the two shooters and of the third victim had not been released this evening.

Home improvement projects do a lot more than just make your house pretty. Home improvement projects can also increase your home's value, improve its quality, and make it more energy-efficient. In this article we will discuss tips for successfully completing home improvement projects.

If your kitchen's counter space is very limited, look into over-the-range microwaves. Replacing the range hood, these microwave ovens come in a wide range of prices, and some have special features such as convection cooking. Most of these have a filter that recirculates air as opposed to having a vent. This means they are better for people who do not need a vent.

Remember your environment whenever you are making improvements to your home. Doing something strange like an uninsulated sun room at a high northern latitude might make potential homeowners scratch their heads and hesitate to make you an offer. Try to choose projects that go with the surrounding area, and take climate into consideration.

Whenever you need to go the home improvement store, it is best that you have a checklist of all the things you have to use. By doing this, you will make sure to get everything you need the first time you are at the store.

Maintain good records of contracts and agreements with any professionals you hire. Avoid thinking the contractor will do that for you. Keep a folder with all contracts and invoices relevant to the project you are doing. This helps everyone involved stay focused on the current task.

The better your home's curb appeal is, the more money you can get out of it when it sells. Always remember that the premium price brought by the view might not be thought of as a smart investment. You need to think of the future buyers when investing in your property because they might not like your design style and possibly will not pay the additional cost for the home.

Through home improvement, your home value can increase and become more energy efficient. This article has talked about some great home improvement ideas for you to start. Also included are some valuable tips to get you on the right track. Begin right away and take advantage of the benefits.

Coming home everyday to a home that is falling apart can be very discouraging. Don't become discouraged, as the improvements can be done in a cost-efficient and timely manner. Use the helpful ideas and tips below to get started today.

If you can afford it, go with authentic wood flooring over laminate. Despite a similar appearance to real wood and being easy to take care of, laminate cannot be refinished. The floor will have to be replaced in the future, either by you or a different owner.

There are two main ways that you can make your ceiling look like it is higher than it actually is. Try painting stripes on the wall or you can just add a taller floor lamp. This will create a unique optical illusion. Your eyes can remain focused on going up the lines, and that can make the ceilings look higher than they are.

Paint your old walls with coordinating stripes before installing paneling. No matter how carefully you install paneling, it seems the old wall sometimes peeks through. To help camouflage this effect and keep this from being distracting, measure out where each panel will meet before your installation. Choose a paint color that matches the color of your paneling, and paint strips of this color wherever the panels will meet.

Does your vinyl floor covering have a bubble in it? If so, then pop it! It is a simple way to release all of the air. Doing this will only flatten the bubble for a short period of time. It can come back if you do nothing. Then shoot in some glue to keep that section affixed to the floor. In order to properly do this, you should use glue that comes already loaded inside a syringe.

Being able to come home each day to a home you are proud of is an investment that you won't regret. Follow these tips, and you will soon be making some beautiful home improvements. Keep learning, and if you must, take it slow and only do small projects at first. Just work hard and you'll have an amazing residence in no time.
