A Half-Breed Heart

On a stormy night in late August, a lone woman walked the cold street with a scowl across her face. The rain poured down her ivory silhouette and her crimson locks clung to her back. Her red eyes stared ahead as she continued her solitary stroll in the solemn street. It had been quite a long evening for her.

Nyx Pandora Mikami was from another world entirely and now banished to the realm of humans for her tainted blood. The demoness, as she was called, had been born to a wealthy vampire lord and his wife twenty-two years ago in the dark underworld. She was raised with her taught hatred of their neighboring race called the Night Shifters. Their haired hides had pillaged their kingdom a century ago and now the vampires sought revenge. The battle was grand and Nyx was at the front lines slaughtering left and right with her thorned whip strangling their necks from the shadows. Unfortunately one beast had gotten the advantage and pinned her to the ground, digging its teeth deeply into her wrist and her blood spilled onto the ground! Her comrades killed the beast and took her to her father. Upon discovery of her tainted blood, she was given the choice of banishment or execution.

"Damn that savage were-cat for biting me as I was exposed! My home, family, and kin have disowned me. Now this dull world is my new dwelling..." The crimson-eyed demon sighed and pushed her hair to the side to glimpse into the alley ahead. "I probably should get something to eat if nothing else tonight. Not to mention this black cloak and peasant dress will need exchanged for more appropriate attire."

Nyx found a stripper in the alleyway smoking a cigarette and counting her tips from her loose corset. The black corset with red laces and matching black mini-skirt were just what the demon was looking for. Within a matter of minutes the human was drained and lifeless on the cold ground covered by the black cloak Nyx had adorned earlier. The crimson-haired demon wiped her blood-stained lips and slipped into the clothes of her victim. Her black thigh-high heeled boots echoed off the pavement . "All too easy."

An hour had passed and the young woman found her travels had brought her to a suburb. There was a young woman in her early twenties sitting on her porch reading a novel illuminated by her lantern. The rain was still pouring and only slightly slowing down. The demoness looked at the human woman curiously as the lantern burned brightly. The human looked over at Nyx with her sapphire eyes peeking out from under her long raven-colored hair. She stood up, advanced to the edge of the porch lifting her lantern higher to look into the rain at her visitor.

"Good evening, miss." The young woman cooed warmly. "You shouldn't be traveling alone in the rain like that. Haven't you a place to stay tonight?"

Nyx was surprised by the girl's flowery voice and concern for a total stranger dressed in minimal clothing. "No actually. My father has declared me a traitor and I have dishonored him. As of tonight, I am banished from my home and may never return. This storm doesn't bother someone like me. I have seen far worse than a rain storm."

"Dishonor? What kind of father puts honor above his own flesh and blood?" The woman waved her hand toward the porch and beckoned the stranger to come over to her home. When Nyx refused to move, the young woman walked over holding her umbrella and the lantern close to her. "Certainly you will not stay out in this storm because of a father who does not have a heart. Please, come inside. You look dreadfully frozen."

The human grabbed Nyx's gloved hands and pulled her to the porch. The demon pulled back slightly but found herself at the door regardless. "Welcome to my home, Miss... uh?"

"Nyx," the demon replied. "Nyx Pandora."

"Nyx? Unusual, but pretty all the same." The woman turned the door knob and smiled back at Nyx. "You can call me Aiko, Miss Nyx. Aiko Masaki."

The pair decided to reside together for more than one night when Aiko found that Nyx had no family in the country and therefore without anything or anyone else to keep a roof over her head. Since Aiko was working at the local restaurant as a waitress during the day, she needed someone to help her with maintaining her house and getting errands run that she couldn't otherwise do. Nyx hadn't told her about her real upbringing and her true mixed race of being part vampire and now part were cat. Truthfully, getting a basically free room and board with minimal work to be done was more than she was hoping for upon being banished. Aiko had truly gone beyond standard hospitality. Nyx had been so used to her upbringing and seeking only malice and destruction that all of Aiko's kindness was a mystery to her. The raven-haired woman often brought home meals and even got her raw steaks without questioning why they had to be raw in the first place. One night on her nightly run through the park, she invited Aiko along to hang out to mark five months after their meeting.

Finding a bench in the middle of the wooded path, the two women sat down and looked up at the starry sky. Nyx looked down at Aiko who was slightly shorter than her and spoke softly folding her gloved hands together. "So why did you let me stay with you the past few months when you didn't know a thing about me anyway?"
Aiko's sapphire eyes looked back up at her with a surprised gleam. "Why would you ask me that now after so much time has passed? I saw you in the rain and I couldn't let you stay out there all alone and soaking wet to the bone. You might have frozen to death!" Her face turned back to the stars. "Living alone was sad at times before I met you. It's nice to have someone who I-" Her cheeks grew pink and her lips closed tightly in mid-sentence.

Nyx looked curiously at her roommate. Stopping short was never a norm for her. Still, the demon was not fond of unresolved curiosity. The woman's motives never made sense to the demon. Suddenly her stomach began to ache and her throat grew dry. It was her usual feeding time where she would be hunting livestock or rodents to satisfy her dark hunger. Human blood was rare for her to consume due to a living situation such as this. She missed the rich iron taste it had but was learning to make due with vermin. With Aiko here with her right now, she had to force herself to delay her schedule. Answers where more important than her hunger for once. She searched desperately for answers to the question she had been pondering for the past week. "Why is it that I never see you with a date or anything? I never see young men coming to the house to ask you out to dinner or even anyone driving you home from work. At twenty years of age you should be taken by a proper suitor or at least looking for one." She folded her hands close to her stomach trying to fight off the hunger attempting to overtake her judgment.

"I found someone a while ago." Aiko smiled a bit still looking at the sky. "This person treats me very well and I don't think I would ever be harmed. I always feel safe when I'm around her."

"The pair's eyes met once more. Nyx looked confused and Aiko felt her cheeks grow hot. "Men never treated me with respect or tried to make me feel comfort when I needed it. I've... I've fallen in love where I didn't expect to find it." Aiko hesitantly placed her hands on top of Nyx's knees and swallowed hard. For her it was a risk she never had to take before. "I've fallen in love... with... you." Aiko quickly leaned forward and gently pressed her lips to Nyx's.

The demon was beyond confusion and surprise. One moment she was having a conversation with her roommate and the next she finds herself sharing a first kiss. This kiss was with a human woman of all things! Oh the dishonor sure was stacking up! Still, Nyx couldn't bring herself to pull away. Aiko’s lips were so soft and warm on her own cold lips. She felt that her body's natural cold temperature would thaw solely from Aiko's kiss. The demon closed her eyes and grabbed Aiko's hands, gently kissing her back and parting their lips to share a warm breath. All traces of hunger were fading. In this moment, Nyx felt alive for the very first time.

After a few moments, Aiko pulled away very slowly and she looked down at their entwined fingers. Had her love been returned or had it been in vain? The crimson-haired woman leaned in and whispered softly. "If you say you love me and you mean it, stay still, Aiko... Please... don't make a move before I tell you." She parted her lips and revealed her sharp pearly fangs staring at Aiko's pale neck. The young human felt her eyes grow wide and her heart race. "Aiko... I can't love a human as a vampiric creature... But I won't follow my father's law by killing a human for discovering my race either... I just... I need you to surrender to me, my love." Hearing her say that, Aiko closed her eyes and let a single tear fall down her cheek. She nodded and took a deep breath.

Five minutes later, Nyx withdrew her fangs and her hunger was satisfied. She licked the blood off Aiko's neck and the cold collarbone attached to it. Aiko looked up at Nyx, feeling weak and cold. "Am... am I going to die tonight, Nyx? Do I have to die?"

Nyx wiped the woman's tear from her cheek and cradled her body in her arms. "No. I would never kill you, my raven. I have given you new life through my bite. You now can live like I do. You will never age. I could not live long after your mortal death would come. Not if you really mean what you said and did. Now I can live beside you and hold you through all of your struggles without you feeling the chill of my skin like before."

The new mixed breed slowly rose to her feet and grabbed onto Nyx for safety. Nyx smiled for the first time in a long while and picked her new lover up and headed back to their home. Tonight, they would be curled up by the fire and making it a night to truly remember... eating Aiko's first raw steak and sharing many soft kisses in the warm glow.
