PlayStation Woes
I hadn't used my PlayStation 3 in a while. A few days ago, I found out that Frozen Free Fall: Snowball Fight is available. It's the console edition of the smartphone game I've been hooked on for a year and a half.
(What can I say? I like Frozen Free Fall.)

So, I fired up my PS3, hoping I could get the game downloaded. What should I see? I need to download the newest update for the PS3 firmware before I could access the PlayStation Store. Annoying, sure, but it was only around 30-ish megabytes. Let's get this over with.
So, after doing some chores and whatnot, I came back to see the download was complete. Let's log in to the PlayStation Store!
You need to download the latest update of the PlayStation Store software! Another 54 megabytes to download!
... ... ...

Fine. Let's get this over with too.... I'm not made of bandwidth though, you know. Keep in mind our ISP gives us caps every month. We don't have the best internet speed either. A 54-megabyte download is going to take 50 minutes, give or take.

Huge inconvenience at this point — I'd keep attempting to download the PlayStation Store update, but every single time it would give up after 15 or 30 MB, and this message shows up: "An error occurred during the download operation."
I retried time and time again, only to see the same message.... It took me a whole day of attempts until I could get the thing to download all the way through.
(Random thought: if the download gets interrupted, why can't my PS3 just continue from where it left off from the the last download attempt? What gives?)

So anyway, by an act of God, I got the software update all fired up, eventually. Let's go get Frozen Free Fall: Snowball Fight!
It's a hefty download, by my standards: 332 megabytes. (I know to some of you readers, that's not a big deal, but it is to me and my internet speed and bandwidth cap.)

It took a good 3 hours to download, more or less.
Once I got it installed, I was ready to roll. Let's just play the game already!

A notice appears! To use the online features of this game, you must download the newest software update! Press OK to log in to your PlayStation Network account.

.... I press OK.
It tells me the software update for Frozen Free Fall: Snowball Fight is 332 megabytes.
.... ... What?

Just.... WTF?!
The game's software update is just as big as the game itself?!
You want me to download the entire game again?!

I'm aware that games get software updates from time to time, but this update came out immediately after I downloaded the game?! Seriously?!

Forget it!
I'm not going to update until later in the month.
I'm just thankful I can play the current version for now.

It's stuff like this why I hate the video game industry sometimes.

Call me a cranky old codger, but I liked it better when you'd just go to a store, buy a cartridge, and stuck it in the machine. There's no headache involved.
