The morning sun first showed itself over the Peaks of Platos, shining down on a group of three travelers, thousands of miles west of the range. They were already up, because their leader woke them up an hour before dawn. It was their third day out of Sanctuary, and they realized why foot travel was rarely done.
The land was flat, true, and the roads were straight. However, all three had noticed a...presence, perhaps, watching them. Their newest member, and also their youngest, by a little over a year, who was their guide, as well, had said it was the spirit of Oros, one of the twin gods who had created their planet, which they had called Tarnath.
"Oros and Platos fought for many days and many nights over the newborn land, even going so far as to create swords of their own godly essence. When the dust settled, they had both fallen, Oros in the fields, Platos in the mountains. Those of our ancestors who had been the first created named the lands after them, and enshrined the swords made from their essence in towers. The Sword of Oros lies deep, deep within the Fires of the Sun, at the bottom of the tower that Lord Dante now occupies. The Sword of Platos is in Havek's Tower, at the very southernmost point of the Peaks of Platos, which you can see peeking up from just over the horizon."
Matt swore, flicking a cigarette butt to the side.
"That's ungodly far, Sarah."
John dropped his own, crushing the fire out of it, then grasped his friend's shoulder.
"It's the way life is, Matt. If you go back alone, the trees should let you through. If you don't want to take part in this journey, now is the time to let me know."
"That's not it, John. We're stepping in something that's quite possibly far too big for either of us to comprehend. Hell, Dan and Steve probably have the swords."
"I find that entirely unlikely. Sarah, has anyone ever taken possession of these swords, ever?"
"Not to my knowledge. As far as I know, the blades can only be carried by those who are in the line of the gods, and I don't know if that's even possible."
"Why not?"
"Because of how this world was created."
