"But he's your brother! Surely you don't want to actually kill him?"
John smiled sadly, the weight of his short years suddenly becoming obvious on his face, and Sarah recoiled briefly. He chuckled to himself. If it had been one of his own lieutenants in the school underground, they'd have been knocked flat for that. However, this was just a girl who didn't know his style; as such, she deserved no such thing.
"Steve will kill me if I don't get to him first. Therefore, I will. Now, if you'll excuse me, Miss Carpenter, we must be on our way. Matt, let's go."
He started to pull away from the bar to retrieve his friend, who was now attempting to drain the pockets of several warriors at a game of cards, and was apparently quite successful, when the girl tugged at his sleeve again.
"Sir, how old is your son?"
"Seven. Why?"
"Oh, no reason..."
John shook it off, and grabbed Matt from the table before he could part any more money from its owners, and the two left. On their way out of town, John heard a shouting voice calling his family name, a voice he had just heard, and he paused and turned to see Sarah Carpenter, holding a few straggling belongings.
"You'll need a guide."
"No, we won't, Miss Carpenter."
"Please, call me Sarah, Mr. Hetfield."
"I can't. I don't know you well enough. And I won't need a guide to find my brother."
"You will in this land. Directions change sometimes."
"Wait, what? How?"
"We're not sure. It's almost like something's wrong with the flow of the land, and the flow of time. For instance, it's been two hours since you left the bar."
"No, it hasn't. It's barely been fifteen minutes."
"See what I mean?"
"And why should I take you?"
"I'm from the area where Havek's Tower still stands. Five years ago, I traveled this land all over."
"If that's so, why do you work at that bar?"
Sarah paused, thinking, then smiled brightly.
"I was going to cross the desert, but the tales I had heard stopped me, so I stayed in Sanctuary. Eventually, I started working at the bar. They can afford to lose me. I really want to go with you."
"All right...Sarah. You can come. As long as you call me John. And this is Matt. I'll tell you more of the story as we go along. Havek knows I'm coming; just not when, or how, or where."
