Ok, my elemental charie's actually use word's to focus their spell's more, instead of shooting out a random burt of magical element, they control how much power is put into it. By just saying the name of the spell they can call their element's quickly when needed. But they can also say the full incantations for the spell's, thus focusing it's power into a more concentrated blast to do more damage.
The first part of the spell is alway's calling upon the watch tower of the main element that make's up it's property, or if it's a combination of two element's ((like ice is a combination of water and wind)) then they call upon the power of two of the tower's. These are just the more advanced techniques, just simply summoning a small flame to light a campfire or wind to dry one's clothes once wet don't need to be voiced verbally, but can be summoned on whim.

Bio: One of the last of her race. Rin is one of the few hundread Yuan-ti left that wasn't slain in the medieval ages. Her race's numbers dwindled almost to extinction, then went into hiding in the rain forest's and thicker areas. Their aren't enough of them to begin re-populating the earth too much. She eventually came across this school, and decided this would be the best place to stay for a couple years. She can change her tail into two leg's, but it takes consentration to switch back and forth. Most of her skin is scaly instead of smooth, so she usually wear's long clothing like gloves or long-sleeved shirts, and cover's up completely with sunglasses and everything if she ever has to go someplace where their are normal humans.

Any other gate requires quite a bit more force and power to pull out.
