Lately I've been selling a lot of stuff in the marketplace. 963 as of this moment actually. This is the most dedicated I've ever been to selling stuff in the marketplace, and it's mostly because my inventory always ends up full of stuff I don't want from the vast variety of loot I acquire while playing games on Gaia. I just can't stand the mess!!
In a way, however, this turned out to be a good thing. I've finally been able to quest for those items I've always wanted and completed my dream avi. Still, after all these successful sales, I feel like I should share a few tips for those who are starting out, or just haven't done it enough to get the hang of it yet.
[1] Wastes Of Your Time - Anything that is worth less than 1,000,000g is not with selling. You can get that amount of gold faster with the defeat of just a few animated in zOMG!.
[2] Disposal - Items less than 1,000,000g are a burden that you can easily dispose of by "donating" it to the Dumpster Dive game.
[3] Quality - Gaians like items with many poses, cute items, and cool items that are well designed. Not all items are designed equally. If the design sucks, people will not buy the item at a high price, no matter how limited it is.
[4] Categorize - Judge the item you're selling and place it into a category. Is the item cute? cool? Does it have many poses or few? Does the design look attractive? Or is it the most hideous thing you've ever seen and are dying to get rid of?
[5] Marketing - The categorization you decide upon will also affect how you can market the item. If the item is cute, cool or has many poses, people will buy it even if the price is high. If the item is designed poorly or looks ordinary or unattractive, the item will sit in your store without budging for weeks. (Though not always, some people will surprise you.)
[6] Getting All The Facts - Before selling anything, be sure to always look at the listings already out for the item in the marketplace. The "Lowest Buy Price" and "Average Price" information displayed while creating a new listing, is not reliable as it is not always up to date.
[7] In Line Of Sight - If you're trying to sell things quickly, I suggest selling your item below all the other listings of it's kind in the marketplace. This will cause your item to show up first on the list so it's what people see most often and the customer will love that your prices are the lowest. This will quickly attract anyone and everyone to buy your item.
[8] Lowball Etiquette - Don't lowball your items too much or too little. If something is selling for 2,500,000g, then sell yours for 2,400,000g or 2,450,000g. It's not 2,000,000g so you wont lose as much on the sale. Still, it's also not 2,499,999g which makes you look desperate. Some people would buy the second option of 2,500,000g below yours, just to avoid your desperation. Not to mention it's a bit rude to the person who was selling it for 2,500,000g. And there is such a thing as respect among venders.
[9] Taxes, Oh My! - Remember there is a 5% deduction on all your marketplace sales. If you're not willing to take that cut, wait until the item market value goes up, or sell it through "The Gaia Exchange" forum by making a deal with interested Gaians and trading the item/gold to avoid the 5% deduction.
[10] Avoiding Multiples - If you have multiples of the same item, be sure to sell them one at a time. When you sell only one you play with people's emotions making them think that if they don't hurry up and buy it ASAP they will lose their chance to get the item for the price you're selling it. They will fear that the price will go up. Or if there are only a few listings for that item, that they will lose their chance to get the item all together. Praying on their fears and anxiety will make you a better and quicker profit. Then once the item is sold, sell another one of the same, reseting your emotional trap for the next victim that comes along.
So those are all the marketplace seller tips I can think of as of now. I'll add more later if I think of any other ones, but this should suffice to turn just about anyone from a novice into an expert seller in no time! ^_^
Oh, and I almost forgot! If you ever see this red announcement when creating a new listing:
Then congratulations! You've had a hand in creating Gaia Marketplace history!
