Coffee With Codemonkey
What Codemonkey is working on right now!
The return of Codemonkey
I have been encouraged by Narumi and Lanzer to start a journal to keep Gaians up to date with what I'm working on.

First a bit of backstory.

As most of you know about 2 years ago this month I left Gaia to live in Thailand with my wife's family. It was a wonderful time in a lot of ways. I got to know my in-laws much better, and we help to ease my father-in-law's final years. I stayed until September of 2016 when I needed to return to the US to look for work.

In February I was invited back to Gaia by Lanzer. I hesitated to answer, not from mulling anything over, but shock and excitement. I accepted as soon as my brain could tell my fingers what to text back.

The Gaia I returned to was not the Gaia I had left. I was glad that Lionheart and Narumi, Pi, Pepper-Tea were still there, but also Lanzer, Cp and Locke had returned. In this business, you work with a lot of good talent, but when it is done, you move on. To have the chance to work with this collection of people again was more than I would have ever hoped for. A lot of times when you go to a job, people are there to put in the minimal work needed to get the paycheck. I don't know what it is about Gaia. The team we have now seems to have such passion for their work. Everybody puts in more than is required. Maybe it is just that it provides us a creative outlet to put our work in front of a large appreciative audience. Yes, coding is a very creative endeavor. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

One of the differences now is that I am working remote. Sometimes I will go into HQ and it is wonderful, but also strange to know I will not be there the next week. I miss seeing everyone, but at the same time we still talk and I am now able to work for Gaia and travel. 2 weeks ago, I was in NYC. 1 week ago I went to Fanime and Gaia HQ. 2 days ago I was in central Illinois on a literary quest tracking down places that inspired the book Spoon River Anthology. Ok, I'm a literary and history geek. If you are going to be weird, go all out!

Soon I hope to return to Thailand and work for Gaia from there!

Thanks for reading! Next time I'll talk about some of the things I'm working on.
