It's like having a Smash Ball, and you're a character whose Final Smash will only work when you're standing next to one of your opponents.
Your player isn't Yoshi, where he can activate his Final Smash from wherever and then go after his opponents as his final form, your player is more like Roy. He has this incredible sword attack -HUGE potential- that causes a KO instantly. It's powerful, it's intimidating, it's quick and immediate...but it must be done at the perfect opportunity, otherwise its effort will have been completed in vain.
Here's the problem: you're Roy, you've acquired the Smash Ball, but you're playing in Hyrule Temple. The stage is ginormous. Your opponents are divided onto each side of the stage, different levels, so you can only go after one. When you choose, your opponent flees, running away in a circular pattern. You try to chase after him, changing directions in an attempt to catch up, but as you do, he changes his route as well.
Not before long, the incredible Smash Ball that you acquired has disappeared. You were never given the opportunity to activate your Final Smash because you never had the opportunity to get close enough...so it just faded away.
That's how my love works.
It's unconditional, selfless, and could flow infinitely if given the green light, but it's never gotten the chance. I've never had the reassurance of a two-way street, so I've never been able to get close enough. In the end, all that potential, all that work to muster it up in the first place, has always just faded away.
