Take a minute and reflect on this question - how would you describe someone who is a strong leader? You would likely say they are powerful, dynamic, a great communicator and someone with excellent oratory skills. While these are all excellent leadership skills, they take time to develop. If you are looking to develop skills such as these, continue reading to learn more about all it takes to become the leader you want to be.



Watch out for project creep. This can happen when your project's scope isn't clearly defined. If you have control over the project, resist the temptation to add more project objectives as time goes on. If you are receiving external pressure to expand your project, resist it with all your might. Your subordinates will thank you.



Say thank you to your employees. Many studies have been done on the power of a thanks given from a manager to his or her employees. It increases productivity, often by a lot. Just a little graciousness really can help extend your power as a leader, so be active about it.



Walk the talk. Leaders don't say one thing and do another. When you're a business leader, you should try to treat your team or staff in the way that you'd like to be treated. Looking down on people isn't right and doesn't promote a good work atmosphere. If you treat you show your staff respect, they will return the favor which can make your life much easier.



Don't engage in underhanded behavior. For a good leader to build trust, come through with promises. If your claim is that your business has the best service for a particular category, then you need to communicate this to your employees so they know how best to give the best service.



Do not put your self above your team. You are all working together. You are working towards the same goal as your workers and their work reflects on you. Always remember that you are a part of your team, even if you have a different title than everyone else.



When in business, try to always lead by example and never just by title. Even if you are not a supervisor or manager, try to be as good at your job as the person above you. This can be a great way to personally move up the ladder, especially if the higher ups see you motivate higher productivity in everyone around you.



As a leader, you are responsible for forming the goals and aspirations of your team. Come up with a best-case scenario for your team, and your vision for the future. Share these goals with them, and ask them for their feedback and suggestions. A true leader has a team under him that is focused on the same goals, and how to achieve them.

Don't play favorites. Each of your employees should be treated equally when it comes to showing them interest and respect. Good leaders treat others how they would like to be treated. Exhibit fairness and keep your promises.



Be a passionate leader. It is easier for other to follow a leader that truly cares about the group's goals. Great leaders should have a genuine passion and enthusiasm for the projects in progress instead of just making sure everyone is finishing their work. Express your passion and let everyone know that you care about their progress. When someone shares with the group, let them know that their contribution is appreciated.



Use your knowledge of your employee's strengths when delegating work. Try to spread mundane tasks out over a large amount of employees. Give a variety of individuals the opportunity to attempt tasks that are challenging, exciting and give them some form of responsibility. One important aspect of being a good leader is building effective leadership abilities in others.



Being a good leader means being clear with what you expect from your employees. They aren't mind readers, and neither are you. A good team thrives on structure which you can provide. Tell your employees what's expected of them. Be clear in your goals. Don't be vague about outcomes.



Now you can see why it is important to always learn new skills that help people to become an effective leader. Leadership does not come overnight. It takes years of learning and a determination to be the best a person can be.
