Mindfulness meditation? | Yahoo Answers
I have ADHD. I started meditation with "Mindful Breathing" a few years ago. It really helped me to maintain focus and remain mentally 'in the now'. It teaches us to let random or negative thoughts and impulses pass us by with out becoming attached to us. Its really easy and its one of the first steps to more directed forms of meditation. You can do it anywhere.

The way Mindful Breathing works is this. You just notice your breathing. You don't try to change it or control it in any way, you just notice it. When a thought or impulse comes into your mind, you just let it go by. Use the breath as an anchor for your attention and let the thoughts go by like water past a rock. I started doing this for a few minutes at time as an exercise. After a few days, I learned how to do it while I was focused on something else. That http://www.scribd.com/doc/325616979 and I really felt happier in general. Recently, I was able to do more focused meditation for longer periods.

If you can get to a Buddhist temple and talk with some monks or nuns, you should do it. They are very friendly and helpful. They won't try to convert you or anything like that. They just know a lot about meditation. Also, you might check if there are any meditation groups around your area. You can search on the internet or even the phone book. There are several books and websites about it if you don't feel comfortable talking to people you can learn on your own. (I started with a book.)

Of course, If you haven't already, you should talk to your doctor or a psychiatrist to see if there are problems you might need to address with medication. I couldn't really meditate beyond mindful breathing before I started on medication for vinyasa yoga my ADHD. Now I find its easier to meditate and the things I learn while meditating, carry over even when I'm not on the meds so the two together have really improved my life a lot. I've found that even when I'm not taking the medicine, my focus and impulsiveness are easier to control.

I hope you find an answer you can use.
