As competition for visitors becomes increasingly fierce online, optimizing your site for search engines is more important than ever. Most internet users never get past the first page of search results, so if your site doesn't show up there, your traffic will suffer. Learn some easy tips for optimizing your site in this article.

In search engine optimization, a website with many links leading to it from other sites, will receive a big boost to its position on the results page. Search engines give great weight to exterior links that mention search terms when evaluating the relevance of a particular website. Cultivating these links is an effective search engine optimization strategy.

Frequent updates are a powerful tool in the ongoing effort to optimize a website for search engines. It is tempting to view search engine optimization as a one-time treatment for a business website, but in fact it is an ongoing process. Adding fresh content to a website - content that contains the same keywords as the rest of the site - can leverage the site's position on search engine results pages.

Use your strongest keywords in your site's name, in the sub-folders, and in the page names. This will help your site, as well as individual pages, rank more strongly. Search engines will give relevant pages high rank, and you can link those pages to others in your site. All of this strengthens your entire site and helps it to rank.

To search engine optimize your website, avoid using navigation menus that utilize JavaScript, forms or CSS. These types of navigation menus can't be crawled by search engine spiders. If you must use one of these types of navigation menus, be sure to duplicate your site navigation, as normal hyperlinks, in the footer of each page.

When you start a blog associated with your website, put it under the same domain name as your main site if at all possible. If your blog attracts attention other bloggers or online writers may link to it. Then, if your blog shares a domain with your website, links to the blog will improve the main site's position on search engine indexes.

Bold your keywords to allow search engine crawlers an easier hunt. Crawlers are intelligent, but sometimes they may have difficulty recognizing what your keywords are. To alleviate this issue, highlight your keywords by putting them in bold. It will make them easier to find, take less time for the crawler, and put you higher in the rankings.

One of the best search engine optimization techniques is to select specific and relevant keywords or keyword phrases. You will want to select a keyword, and then optimize your page to that specific word or phrase. Moreover, choosing specific keywords or keyword phrases are going to get you much better search results than using broad terms.

The Associated Press (AP) style of references is great for newspapers, but is not all that Search Engine Optimization (SEO) friendly. No matter what the AP rules say, it's helpful to use full names as references later on in your copy if you're working towards SEO. Keywords in the copy are still important to achieving a higher page rank.

One key component of proper search engine optimization is to create a sitemap that contains links to every page of your website. This allows search engine spiders to easily navigate your site, often resulting in more of your pages getting indexed. Not only that, but a well designed sitemap can help your visitors quickly find the information that they need.

Rather than spamming your new website information everywhere you look, it may be best to allow your website to be found naturally by search engine crawlers. If you allow this to happen, search engines will take a more favorable glance at your site, as it seems that you are working on your content, rather than getting noticed.

Use http://www.worldmap.harvard.edu/maps/8524/info/ and H3 tags sparingly as they can trick search engine spiders into thinking your website is spam. The actual algorithms and mathematical equations used by search engines to determine page rank aren't entirely known, but many believe they have at least a good idea. The space between header tags seems to be an indicator of a spam site, so only using one (H1) can avoid that problem entirely.

Google uses the HTML title tag to help rank websites, so ensure that yours is using your top keywords. The title tag holds more ranking weight than any other element on your website, so it needs to reflect the keywords that you've found drive the most traffic to your site. Don't overdo it, though, as Google will not index long titles.

To help you best leverage internet marketing, focus on your use of the title and meta description tags as much as possible. Keep the most relevant tags near the beginning and make them as unique as possible to help your site appear higher in search results. If your site comprises multiple pages, keep tags between pages different and try not to use the same tags on every page.

Hopefully you've just learned a lot about search engine optimization and bringing your website lots and lots of hits. If you put these tips to work you will have all the visitors you need in no time. You did all that hard work to make your site, this final push will make it complete.
