Scandal Over Olivia Sprauer Bikini Photos:
It seems like just about every week we hear at least one story in the news of a teacher (usually young and female) being fired and / or arrested for participating in improper behavior (usually sexual) with a pupil.
Mathematically speaking, it shouldn't be any surprise that the teacher caught in a compromising position with a pupil is female. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, about three-quarters of all public school teachers are female. Teaching has, like nursing and a few other fields, long been considered a female profession. Which is why I very nearly passed over the story of Olivia Sprauer, a youthful, female teacher in Florida who was fired several weeks ago for allegedly improper behaviour.
Ms. Sprauer's case, however, is different. She wasn't fired for inappropriate interaction with a pupil. Nor was she fired for appearing in a pornographic film. Instead, she was fired for having professional photos taken of herself wearing a bikini.

Ms. Sprauer obviously understood she was taking a risk by being photographed in skimpy swimwear. Employment contracts for many classes of public employees include actions clauses which dictate that behavior beyond work hours can be considered when rating general job performance. Teachers are (possibly unfairly) more changed by these conduct clauses, since their primary audience is kids and it is supposed that children will be more negatively affected by alleged base behaviour on the part of their teachers than fellow adults would.
Aside from parents, the adults that kids spend most of their time with are teachers. As a parent of two young kids in public school, I understand (and expect) that teachers have a role model component with their occupations. But I can also categorically state that if one of my sons' and daughters' teachers (who are both female) did some bikini modeling quietly, I wouldn't be worried at all.
As naturists, we realize that morality is an enormous grey area, and follow vary from state to state and region to region. So maybe we are much less troubled by bikini photos in Ny as http://rudefly.us 've been in Florida (oh, the irony!).
Though I believe we can all concur that the first thing we need from our teachers is competence. Did Ms. Sprauer's outside-of-work photo sessions impair her ability to instruct? If she'd been surreptitiously photographed wearing a bikini at a public beach, would that have been immoral actions? Or was it just a problem that she modeled and got paid for this? As long as she was effectively facilitating learning in the classroom, what does it matter?
Actions policies are integral to many occupations, and can be particularly significant in an educational environment. My wife continues to be a professor at a couple of different universities, and most higher education associations prohibit relationships between professors/staff and pupils though the students are normally over the age of 18 and so legally adults.
Problems of favoritism and academic dishonesty can appear as a consequence of professor-student relationships, which could be extremely detrimental to the learning environment.
Younger children are certainly impressionable. We can consequently hold teachers in elementary through high schools to a somewhat higher standard of actions. Any number of out of school activities can change how a teacher presents her- or himself in the classroom. Would I want my kids being educated by someone who uses illegal drugs, participates in prostitution, or makes porn movies even if this activity did not materially impact the classroom environment? It's an arduous question, and I could make arguments for and against that teacher continuing in their situation.
But in the instance of Olivia Sprauer, is the simple act of being photographed almost bare satisfactory reasons for dismissal? Or can it be an overreaction driven by society's tendency to equate nudity with sex?
The battle continues.
