On One Hand: Proven Antioxidant ActivityAcai berry has been popularized as a super food, advertising campaigns claiming the fruit's high antioxidant content has disease-preventing effects. In 2008, Dr. Susanne Talcott of Texas A&M University found an increase of antioxidant activity in blood tests within less than 24 hours after Athletic Greens consuming the berry's juice.
On the Other: Super Food MythContrary to popular belief, acai juice does not contain high amounts of antioxidants. In 2008, the "Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry," found the fruit's potency levels lower than pomegranate juice, red wine, concord grape juice and blueberry juice. Fruit juices such as black cherry juice and cranberry juice have a similar antioxidant content to acai berries.
Bottom LineCommercial acai products are a relatively new phenomenon. Acai found its way into the American market in 2001, as a weightloss aid, dietary supplement and disease prevention food. There is not enough research to support these beneficial claims.
