So, last time I updated this, I had recently moved to Porirua, my husband Taina had recently started his IT course, and things at work were at a crossroads, waiting to see what would happen when our store manager Richard left.
So, here's what's happened since.
One day, sick of wondering and hoping David would consider me for a management position, and getting nervous about the fact Amanda seemed to be having a lot of one-on-one discussions with David and with Richard, I decided to take charge.
So I texted the boss, David, and told him I needed to arrange a time for a meeting with him. As his partner Vanita had just had a baby the week before, of course he couldn't arrange it straightaway. But the next week he came in to work one day, and so I pinned him down and asked again. And he took me to the Dixon Street Deli next door, bought me a coffee, and we had a chat.
It was really good. We talked about a lot of things with the business. I shared my thoughts on various things, as well as highlighting the good things I knew I could bring to a managerial role. And I reckon I came across pretty well, like an experienced, mature and intelligent person. Heck, maybe I am that person. Sometimes, anyway.
So he thanked me for putting myself forward, and said he would take it into consideration, but also confirmed that Amanda and Mark were also being considered for a manager promotion.
A week or so later, after Richard had already left as manager, he called me into an office privately though. He announced that he was making Amanda the new store manager.
I had no time to register disappointment however, as he then immediately announced that he wanted me to be the 2iC Manager.
So it was still not ideal for me, to see Amanda, who has worked here at Specsavers for only about six months now and has considerably less knowledge about Optics than me, be promoted over me to store manager.
However, I had been made 2iC Manager. It was a promotion. So I was very happy indeed.
It was announced at a store meeting a few days later, and I've been 2iC-ing ever since.
It doesn't overall change a lot in terms of day-to-day things at work. But I've been focusing a lot more on tracking sales and other targets, and pep-talking the rest of the staff, as well as spending a lot of time on staff training and feedback.
Prior to this promotion, I had been working mostly at the front counter, delegating and organising, rather than doing any dispensing and sales myself. But one of David's requests, when he appointed me 2iC, is that because of my Dispensing Optician qualification, and my high level of experience he wanted me dispensing more.
So now I do a mixture of everything again. And it's okay. Without the old crew with people like Marcus and Lorelle around, I find the atmosphere less threatening. Suddenly I'm the expert at everything, and that's nice.
Taina's course is going well. He keeps getting exactly 76% in all the assignments and tests he's had back so far, which is kinda funny. He's always struggled with being motivated and organised, so it's still hard to make him get things done, and not put them off until the last minute, but he's kept up so far.
And other than that, nothing different happening. Trying to keep up with bills and expenses, seeing as Taina is only earning student allowance currently, which isn't much.
Been watching Netflix a lot. Also been getting back into playing World of Warcraft again finally, after a five and a half year hiatus.
I stopped playing those years ago, because I was struggling with money and couldn't justify the extra expense. I still can't, in fact, because I still have little money. But, I decided to try and make it work. It's a great stress relief game after a long day at work.
And that's about all I have to report.
