A regular mattress cover will not provide adequate protection everything must be completely encased and zipped up, so that bed bugs don't stand a chance of getting through.
Keep bedding off of the floor and as an extra precaution attach two sided tape on the legs of the bed to prevent bed bugs from crawling up. They might try, but will be caught in your trap while you sleep safe and sound. It's a matter of survival with these determined little pests. Trust me; you don't want to get bitten by bed bugs. I saw bites on my sister and they were awful.
De-clutter your home or apartment. Clutter makes it hard to inspect for bed bugs and gives them extra places to hide. Besides, if you discover you actually do have them and need to exterminate there will be all of this unnecessary stuff for them to lay eggs in and escape to.
