PHOENIX (AP) An Arizona lawmaker will resign next month to take on a role with the Nevada Department of Education.
Sen. Edward Ableser said in a statement Friday that he has been appointed founding director of the department's new Office for a Safe and Respectful Learning Environment.
According to Nevada education officials, the office will create programs and training to prevent and identify incidents of bullying and cyberbullying in schools. The office will also administer a new grant program to fund social workers and licensed mental health care workers in schools.
The Democratic lawmaker, who runs a private counseling practice in Tempe, says he could not pass up this opportunity.
Ableser will serve in the Legislature until Sept. 30.
Another Democrat will be selected to fill his seat through an appointment process.
