Plant annuals and biennials to make your flower beds brighter. Using a variety of flowers allows your flower garden to have a different look each season. They are useful for filling gaps in between shrubs and perennials in sunny areas. Some of these that you might consider are petunias, marigolds and sunflowers. If those are not flowers you like, you can also try cosmos, holyhocks or rudbeckias.

You should make sure to divide your irises. You can increase the number of irises you have by splitting clumps that are overgrown. Once the foliage has died off, lift out your bulbous irises. The bulbs will split up naturally in your hand, and when replanted, will often flower the next year. For plants with rhizomes, use a knife to divide them. Throw away the center after carefully cutting new sprouts from the exterior. At the least, each piece will need to have one strong offshoot. Replant them immediately.

Many people think the best green gardens start from seeds, rather than plants. Starting from seed is far less harsh on the environment than using plants you buy at the nursery.
