Segment 2: Is there a connection between ADHD and food dyes with Kara Corridan

Kara, health director at Parents Magazine (www.parents.com) , told Carol that the FDA is acknowledging that there may be a possible link. Possibly, as a result of parental outrage, some companies, such as Kraft, Pepperidge Farm and Chick Fil-A are taking it upon themselves to remove dyes.

Kara emphasized two things: 1) Food labels MUST include any dyes, so parents should always read the labels and 2) reactions to artificial food dyes can vary from child to childso create a checklist so you can closely monitor your childs diet

Could it be also that childrens reactions could be caused from eating too many highly processed foods? Ask Carol. Yes, said Kara, sometimes it can be difficult to figure out whether the problem is caused by dyes or processingand thats why its so important to monitor your childs diet.

Carol then commented that its sometimes been said that only 8 percent out of 6 million children who eat food dyes may be affected, but thats still a huge number, she saidand if youre the parent of one of those 8 percent, those statistics would be important to you.

Segment 3: Learn to grocery shop the healthy way with Layne Lieberman

Layne, dietician, nutritionist and former director of nutrition for the King Kullen Supermarkets, first said that its important that people shop the periphery of the supermarketthe middle is where all the processed food is.

Here are some of her tips for tackling food temptations:

1) Buy organic when possible, because thats an insurance policy. Organic is more regulated than other foods and, at the very least, you are getting no pesticides. Thats not just for produce, she said, but also for things like chocolate and coffee since theyre often created outside of the U.S. and the regulations may be a little more lax.

2) There are certain items that you should ALWAYS buy organic, such as apples. (NOTE: There are 12 of this type of produce, referred to as The Dirty Dozen,, that items tend to hold more pesticides.)

3) Breads that are found in the freezer aisles often have fewer preservatives. For instance, Manna bread, which is frozen, is said to have cooked crust, while the inside is raw.

What do you put on bread? asked Carol. Layne said it could be a little avocado, raw nut butters or My favorite, said Carol, raw cheeses.

4) Another tip: If you cant buy organic meat, buy the leanest cuts. Fat tends to hold preservatives.

Segment 4: Ask Carol

Question: Tim asked if we could talk about chemical-free pools again. (I originally talked about them last year.)

Answer: Tim, Im so glad you asked that, because many people think theyre chemical-free, but arent really.

Take salt-water pools, she said. What is salt? Salt is a mineral substance composed primarily of sodium chloride (NaCl), a chemical compound.

Then Carol said she tried the ozone poolbut that was a lot more trouble than it was worth, constantly breaking down and it would always cost at least $1500 to repair it.

Finally, Carol said, she went with the UV Lightsimple, inexpensive, durable, easy to install. It requires little maintenanceonly necessary to replace the bulb every two years @-$200 -only!!!
