Does Your Vacuum Stink? - Indianapolis vacuum cleaners
Does you vacuum stink? There are some things you can do about that.

Of course you could try to identify the culprit and eliminate it from your house, but in most cases it's our cherished family pets. Inevitably pet dander will build up inside your vacuum and cause an awful odor if not kept in check. The second biggest reason is moister. In a lot of cases people don't even realize they are sucking it up in their machines, but once it's in there, mold starts to grow. Avoid sweeping over wet spots on your carpet, especially around entry ways and appliances.

The simplest and most obvious thing you can do is change your filters. That is where the majority of the odor causing problems are trapped. On bagless machines this can be an expensive undertaking, so make sure you're not spending more money on filters than a replacement vacuum would cost. Also keep in mind that on bagless machines this is a temporary solution. Since your primary filter isn't a bag, you'll need to replace these filters on a regular basis to keep that malodor under control.

Upgrade your filtration. Many manufactures are now offering high filtration, scented, and odor control bags. They are a little more expensive, but they do make a significant difference. You should change your bag regularly as well. Even if the bag isn't full, change it, because there are likely bacteria and mold growing inside that you could be exhausting into your breathing air.

Add vacuum scents to your machine. There are many companies offering a variety of fragrances that are very effective. You'll want to buy something that is granulated; not a powder. Powered scents clog you bag and filter pores causing a huge loss in suction. It also seeps through small orifices and builds up in the motor. With the granules, all you have to do is sprinkle some down on the carpet and sweep it up inside the machine. Usually a tablespoon does the trick.

Follow these easy steps and the odor will be substantially reduced if not eliminated altogether.
