The Pittsburgh Penguins announced Wednesday that they had signed goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to a four-year contract extension. The deal will kick in for the 2015-2016 campaign, and will carry an average annual value of $5.75 million. He was set to become an unrestricted free agent following this season.
The move to extend 29-year-old Fleury may come as a surprise to some Penguins fans, as he can be quite a polarizing figure. His career regular season numbers are solid; where he is Penguins' career leader in both wins (295) and shutouts (31). In the regular season, he boasts a respectable save percentage (.911) and goals against average (2.61) as well.
Those numbers however, dip come playoff time. In the postseason, Fleury has a career save percentage of .905 and a goals against average of 2.68. He played better in last year's playoffs, posting a save percentage of .915; but had had a save percentage under .900 in every postseason campaign that had come prior since the team won the Stanley Cup in 2009.
"I believe in Marc-Andre Fleury, as the team does," said Penguins general manager, Jim Rutherford (a former goaltender). "He's won before and he will win again. We're very pleased to have him signed long term."
Fleury has had a solid start to the 2014-2015 campaign, currently ranking second in the NHL in wins (7) and first in shutouts (3). Through nine games this season, he has a save percentage of .931 and a goals against average of 1.89. Fleury was selected by the Penguins with the first overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
