A variety of media outlets flooded the internet today with excited headlines about Aishwarya Rai's daugher finally being given a new name. In fact Beti B is still Beti B, and these stories are prime examples of the kind of lazy journalism that has surrounded the Bachchans since Aishwarya gave birth a little over a month ago.
The stories stem from a quote by Amitabh Bachchan, who said that "until we find an appropriate name for her, she's 'bitiya'."
Except of course that she's always been bitiya. The writers of these articles seem unfamiliar with the topic at hand (and are obviously unfamiliar with the Hindi language); Amitabh has been referring to Aishwarya Rai's daughter as bitiya since she was born. He even tweeted weeks ago about the name:
Back after an entire day spent in meetings .. warming up to getting back in front of the cameras .. many visitors for 'bitiya'..
No name decided yet for 'bitiya' - the little one. 'Beti' is daughter in Hindi. 'Bitiya' is an endearing form for 'beti' ..
Any news about Aishwarya Rai is instantly gobbled up by her adoring fans, which must make it tempting for papers and websites to publish without doing any research, but just to make it very clear, Aishwarya's daughter does not have a new name. There has been no namkaran and no official name announcement from the family. Bitiya is just an endearment.
