Camrose residents may notice a strange van driving aimlessly around the city between May 25 and 29. There is no need for alarm, however. The purpose of the specially equipped vehicle is to assess the condition of Camrose's roads.
Jeremy Enarson, acting general manager of infrastructure and planning, updated city council on the survey at the May 19 committee of the whole meeting.
"We are going to be undertaking a roadway condition assessment of the community," he said. "They're going to be taking a bunch of video, a whole bunch of readings of our asphalt, to get a handle on what kind of cracking we have, where the potholes are, everything like that - just digitizing everything."
The vehicle belongs to Tetra Tech EBA Inc, an engineering firm serving as the city's consultant, which will be analyzing the collected information to come up with an update of the city's long range roadway remediation plan, helping to determine priority projects, best solutions and correct level of maintenance.
The city's last major review of road conditions was done in 2004/2005 - manually.
"You have a lot of subjectivity...when it was done by manual process," said Enarson. "Because of the amount of time it takes for a person to physically go out there and to do this, they focused only on the arterial roads as well as some of our major collector roadways. We didn't get a good indication of any of our residential roadways, whereas this time it's going to be taking into account the entire city."
The vehicle will be able to cover the entire city - apart from gravel roads, private roads and back alleys - within a week. It will travel at normal speeds, and will not impede traffic.
"Depending on the outcome of this analysis here, administration will have a much better handle on our current assets and it will definitely help to assist us in developing the next 10 year capital plan with respect to roadways," Enarson said.
