cavity wall insulation removal
cavity wall insulation problems - Cavity Wall Insulating Material Problems

Why do properties possess a cavity?

Without a cavity, the majority of properties were assembled prior to 1924. This is also known as 'solid wall building'. From 1924 onwards, most properties were built with a cavity or air gap between the two layers of brickwork. Many people think a cavity was added to prevent water from passing from the outside to the inside and that filling the cavity having an insulating material will permit this to happen. Properties were constructed using a cavity as they are more economical and faster to build. If filling the cavity with insulation caused issues, building regulations (which came into effect in 1982) wouldn't specify that new properties are fitted with cavity wall insulation. Moreover, if it did cause a significant amount of problems, the Government and Utility Companies would not be spending billions of pounds insulating properties that are older, as they've done since the late 1990's.
