Finding Free (Legal) Music Online
If you're like me, you can't afford to pay a dollar (or more) for every song you would like to listen to.  Still, it's fun to have a variety of music to tap your toes to, or to listen to while you work out or do chores around the house.  I have done a little poking around and come across some free, legitimate online sources for free music.

For techno-style work out beats, try downloading the frequently updated files at http://www.motiontraxx.com/ to your iPod or to the iTunes software on your PC.  These tracks are specially designed to keep you motivated to keep your heart rate up.

If you miss the customizable online radio station, Launch, now defunct, try Dizzler!  At http://www.dizzler.com/ you can set up your own player and choose from hundreds of your favorite artists.  Add or remove songs as you please, but if you want to download them, there is a charge.

Classical music fans will really enjoy http://www.classiccat.net/ -- here at Classic Cat you can pick from an alphabetized list of composers for inspirational and relaxing tunes.

If you like country music, try http://www.countryweekly.com/freemusic  Every two weeks Country Weekly updates their free downloads, about half a dozen songs.

Rhapsody offers a free song of the day.  You can head here http://mp3.rhapsody.com/playlistdetail?playlistId=ply.25288413 to find today's freebie.  Check back tomorrow for a new selection!  (You do not have to download their downloading software in order to get your free songs.)

Amazon offers a continuously updated collection of free mp3 files.  Most seem to be jazz, but there are other genres, including alternative tunes, available.  They even offer a free e-mail newsletter with updates.  Check it out at http://www.amazon.com

NEW LINK!!!   Just found this one after publishing my original article.  Check out Munchkin Mozart Downloads at http://www.munchkin.com/information_station/downloads.html#album0 for your baby, toddler (or you!) to enjoy.

NEW LINK!!!   Try out www.Pandora.com to create your own customizable radio station -- or create several - that play the songs you want to hear.  Free registration.  For example, I plugged in "Simple Plan", one of my favorite bands, and it created a station of their music (and similar music or artists) that rotate through a playlist.  I can give a thumbs up or down to each album they pull a song from and it will track my favorites to replay them later or block them.

If you already enjoy your iTunes software, you may already know that if you subscribe to their updates, your weekly newsletter, which arrives each Tuesday, offers a free song of the week, as well as a free music video you can download.

Obviously you get what you pay for so sometimes these freebies are not the best songs around, but if you're willing to sift through them you'll find some gems.
